I was just looking at some stories you guys posted and remembered how I got hooked into this little niche. Here goes..
Ok this must have been 4 years ago. (Now up until about 2 years ago I was not a big car fan.. I mean I knew motors really well and could tear one apart but I didnt know names and had a general lack of experience/knowledge) I was a junior in high school driving my crappy grand am and looking for a new(er) car. Well one of my car buddies came up and told me, "Hey! I just got a new car. It's a Nissan 240sx. Green, 95, and 5 speed." Now I had never even heard of this car and I (wrongfully in hindsight) thought of Nissans as solely trasnport automobiles; nothing special. So I was like, "Cool", but I was thinking, "So what?" So we go out to the school lot and he shows me his new car. It was a base 240. Base everything, but I still really liked it. So we skipped the rest of the school day (shame on me :P ) and commenced on running the crap out of it for the rest of the day. We lived far out in the boon docks so there were a lot of flat straight aways and lots and lots of curves. Best of all there are few people on the road most times so we could really get on it. The handling for a stock car was amazing and I was very impressed by the rwd. I knew what my next car must be. Now let it be known that my friend, Craig, is an amazing driver. But he is also, in the purest sense, crazy. I only dared pushing the car in the corners, but Craig insisted on hitting the speed govenor. So I let him have his fun but left when I had had enough. At this point Craig had owned his car for 11 hours. We drove it for just over 700 miles and 3 tanks of gas. The next morning at school Craig wasn't there. The school announced that he had been in a horrible car wreck and I learned that he was taken to a mental hospital. Well I didn't couldn't believe what I was hearing but none of us saw him for 3 weeks. Then he was back and we all learned what happened. After I left and went home that night, Craig went out and kept driving. Turns out that he was making his way back from Lancaster to Circleville and he took a corner at about 120. Well the govenor kicked in and made his rwd advantage vanish. This is one of the worst wrecks I have ever seen. The car flew off the road smashing 3 mail boxes before hitting a telephone pole. Once it hit it must have flipped but landed back on it's wheels and then started rolling. The aftermath is pretty amazing. The hood is smashed and crunched so it sits about a foot off the car. All the glass is broken or cracked. Suspension is destroyed. The trunk is now where the back seat should be, so, yeah, the entire rear end is pretty much non-existant. The rear diff got shoved back and messed something up in the transmission cause now it is stuck in gear. The drivers seat is bent forward pretty badly. The only part of the body that isn't bent, cracked, crunched, or smashed is the gas cap door. I'm not really sure how Craig even survived, but he tells everyone that he passed out three times before anyone arrived. Oh yeah, and the upper seat belt anchor slammed against Craig's head. He still has a knot behind his ear from it. Turns out Craig didn't have insurance on the car yet (unbeknownced to me) so when the cops arrived he claimed insanity, or something like it. For the most part he got away with it, and since there was no insurance he still owns it. He keeps this wrecked 240 in his garage as a trophy. Right next to his newest trophies; a wrecked '88 300zx (hit a tree at 45), and a '91 240 coupe (2 pistons exploded... don't ask) although not half as beautiful as that wrecked green 240.
Craig only owned his first car for about 14 hours before completely destroying it. I think it's funny as hell.
I bought my '91 fastback a year and a half later, been hooked ever since, but I've grown up. Craig is still crazy. He's driving a gold, loaded '96 240sx that he has ragged out. I keep a picture of his green 240 as the background on my laptop. None of us let Craig drive when we go anywhere.
If I get a chance to go home I'll post some pics.
