My engine is out. Was driving one day and out of no where a horrible ticking/rattling started coming out of my engine and it's loud. They told me it was something that held the chains together that must have gave out. They basicly said that my engine was done with. They told me that it's not even worth it to try to fix but rather to just get a new engine. Mind you that my engine had about 265 k on it. Now i'm stuck with a problem, a shop(one of the guys drives a s13) tells me it will run me about $1400, 900 for the engine and the rest labor. Then I have one of those hood mechanics that's telling me he can get the engine for $500 and swap it for $300 in labor. I personaly don't trust the guy because he's flawed in his work in the past, but I don't have much other options

I'm not familiar with any shops that sell s13 engines. I live in the south bay area in Los Angeles.

Or maybe I can find someone who can do it on this website?

Anyways, this is my only car and have grown fond of my little car it still runs with that f***ed up a** engine.

Can someone please help me out? send me in the right direction, website? shops? anything.

Just not trying to pay an unqualified hood mechanic that hasn't been the best in the past. But as of now it's my only option considering it's in my price range..

KA, I'm assuming? Just buy a motor and swap it in yourself. They plug and play. If you're going to swap it, I could understand, but it's so simple.

Rear main seal, front main seal, clutch kit $350.

Quality gasket set $150.00

Borrowed engine hoist, $0.00

+1 You'll find it to be a more rewarding experience when doing it yourself. NICO has enough knowledge to walk you through ANYTHING you might run into replacing your engine.

Good luck

Seriously just do it yourself, I and a friend may be down to come there any help depending on the scenario but it is really simple and there is definitely enough information floating around this forum to help you if you were to do it yourself.

I wouldnt pay someone else to do work like that, take your time with it and do it right since YOU are not out for the money.

Yeah, I want to do it myself, but don't want to f*** up and leave it all retarded. Last time I tried to fix a ticking in my engine and it didn't go so well. I can do all the simple s***, changing struts and all the simple things. But swapping an engine? I need some kind of help and unfortunatly the only person I know that is willing to help drives a camaro... Last time he couldn't even find how to do the damn tranmission oil change had to figure it out myself. Anyways, I drive an 91' s13 KA24DE. I'm going to consider doing it myself though.. Can you guys enlighten me on what exactly I would need? I will do my own searching on this site it has brought me good answers always.

And if you guys run into any engines for sale in LA or surrounding areas?

Please let me know.

Any website that sell them would really help, or craiglist postings.

I'm going to do this myself, f*** it. Only I know how to treat my car..

have you thought to think this might be as simple as timing chain components?

I was thinking that. Like I said, I'm not the best under the hood. This is the first car i've ever worked on in my life so you can say I was/am a virgin to everything that has been done and will be done to this car. s*** I did my first oil change with this car.

I just spoke with a friend he said I should consider rebuilding it.I will make a video and post it on here just to show you guys the sound that it makes maybe you guys can enlighten me with a better answer to my dilema.

But if I could describe the sound, it's as if i put a handfull of marbles in my engine and they just rattle away..

Everything I've been told has been said by Mechanic's and well, in all reality I shouldn't even take their words into consideration.

Well alot of times mechanics will take your "virginess" and use it against you. Before you jump to new engine, post a vid on here and ask around more...a thousand free eyes is always cheaper than the guy with a wrench

I agree. Post the vid and get feed back. I'm sure that with everyone on here every problem imaginable has been dealt with. If it does come down to a swap check the classifieds craigslist etc. I'd also give a call to the many shops around so cal that do swaps. I'm sure they'll give you a good price on a ka as most ppl junk the ka when they do a sr rb swap.

Working on the internals of an engine and swaping an engine are two different things. It takes more skill to open up an engine and change interior parts then it is to remove an engine and put in a new one. But, when swaping your engine it is best to have 2 friends to help you atleast hold s***.

When I first got my 240 it had a blown engine. I had no experience. I wasted my money on a $900 junkyard engine and put it in myself and with 2 friends. In the last 4 years I have learned so much. I now find engines every day from free to $500. I have also removed my engine several times for random crap. Plus I have used my knowledge to help out many 240 owners in my area. The last time I removed my engine I did it myself. Trust me, do it yourself. You wont regreat it.

1 other thing i would check is pull the valve cover off and make sure the chain guide up top hasn't broke. when mine did on my old motor it rattled and all, thought my motor was shot also, till i did a little looking, would be worth checking. also if it did you can just take it out and trash it, my new motor doesn't even have it, from what i have heard it was deemed unnecessary by Nissan

Exactly what happened to mine. About 2 nights after we finished my motor swap I pulled up to my driveway and heard a super loud ticking noise. The motor was a brand new rebuilt motor. when I pulled it apart the top timing chain guide was snapped in two pieces and just resting on top of the timing chain. I would check that before I do anything else.

But if its something worse and your going to swap it, Definitely do the swap yourself. Im 16 and I did my own swap when I blew my KA up. Its not hard. Just label everything so you could remember what goes where and its a piece of cake.

that marble noise ur hearing is nothing, my old hatch had 128k on it and it made that noise from day one and i drove it like that for 20k, anyway i fixed it before i sold it, pull the valve cover off and look at the top tensioner, on my car it snapped off at the base and was sitting on the chain, apparently the chain would hit it and it would smack the bottom of the valve cover, i reomved it and the motor never mad a weird noise again, the sound i had sounded like a extreme rod knock and sounded like marbles rolling around in my motor, anyway i saved the top tensioner as a prize after i sold the car, i would check that first, its cheaper and the easiest thing u can do, lol i took it to Nissan and they said it was a death rattle and it would be a miracle if i made it out the parking lot
