Well me and a couple of friends were doing some stuff to our cars and also did a compression test. The car had 84k miles on it I did mine again for the hell of it, I did it about 8 or 9 months ago and I averaged 180-185 across all four cylinders. But today I got 150 across all four clyinders and now it has 90k miles. Doesn't make much since to me. Also a friend saw white smoke coming from the exhaust, but I didn't see any when we watched them drive my car.

This really sucks and am wondering of what to do now. I am almost finish with collecting all of the pieces for my ka-t project.

I am thinking of just getting another ka with good compression and swapping it in while I put in my turbo stuff and build the motor that is in the car while I am turboed with the other ka. What do yall think I should do about this perdicament?

Just get a shop to do a leakdown test, it will tell you exactly where your low compression is coming from, and you can decide whether or not it's worth it to fix.

did you happen to take the test one time while the motor was cold and the other while hot? cause temperature does make a difference. as long as theyre all within 5-10% of each other i wouldnt worry about it. but the white smoke isnt good. that means youre burning coolant. blown headgasket possibly. maybe he was just seeing things though since you said you saw nothing. maybe it was cool out and it was just the hot mixing with the cold. if it is a blown headgasket usually there is enough white smoke to where youd be able to see it while you were driving. kinda hard to believe you would be having major problems like that with only 90k miles. but hey **** does happen. i would do the test again while the motor is cool and if the numbers are within 5-10% of each other i wouldnt worry about it. edit* ok i just reread your posts and you said you got 150 all across. dont worry about it, chances are your friend is smokin crack.

I let it warm up for about 10-15 mins. I think since the car wasn't under load it really didn't smoke and while I drove around it started to smoke and then a few minutes afterwards it didn't.

your suppost to take the test cold. have you noticed a loss in power lately? its kinda hard to tell you whats going on with your car over hte internet and not being able to actually see it. if you cant figure it out i would take it to a reputable mechanic. most will look at it for free and be able to tell if its something major or not. a headgasket isnt that bad. just time consuming. if youre mechanically inlcined and have a service manual you should be able to do it in a day.

White smoke can be oil as well. My speculation is that oil burns bluish, but evaporates white. I say this because my first turbo's seals went bad and it smoked white. And it was fine after I swapped the turbo. Also, my car is consuming oil, bt seems to be leaking out of the exhaust valve seals. Again, the smoke is white. Since both these problems are from oil entering after the combustion chamber, it is not actually burning, but intead it's evaporating.

No...compression tests (per the FSM) must have the engine warm to be acccurate.

Throttle wide open, injectors unplugged.

Or fuel pump fuse pulled and fuel pressure relieved, all plugs out, etc.

If you're seriously looking to go KA-T, I'd just get a leakdown test done (as someone else suggested) and take that as the final word on the subject. Shouldn't cost you too much, and you can at least definitively find out if you have a problem or not.

Just out of curiousity, did you use the same gauge when doing the test both times?

yeah, i used the same gauge twice, I got a leak down test 8 months ago and the guy told me that it was safe enough for me to boost the engine. I am going to check my oil level and some other stuff this coming up weekend. I am also going to see if I can get a leak down test down again.

That's frighteningly vague. Is that all he told you? "Safe enough" doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
