Hey guys whats crackin, Im a newbie to this site and also Im a newbie in the drifting era. I have a 90' 240sx, and everytime i turn on my car i notice a couple of things in my car. 1. my e-break light is always on. What can i do to fix it? 2. my engine is making a loud fan noise, everytime i flore it it gets louder. My friend told me its just the fan, but before it would go away everyonce in a while. And now it just stays. What can i do? Or what is it? 3. I notice another noise (besides the "fan" noise) it comes from the bottom front part of the car, and it goes away when i put the clutch in...what is it? What can i do? Help me yall.

Hector from cali.

the light: the brake fluid is low, there is probobly a leak somewere in the system. check the master cylynder, and wheel cylinders.

the fan noise: my car was just doing that too, your fan clutch is locked up, you will need a new one

the other noise: you will have to be more specific on that

maybe you need to change the brake pads. always check your pads before you fill up with fluid. if they are less than 1/4 inch thick, you should think about changing them. If the noise goes away when you put the clutch in, its prolly the clutch or the pilot bearing. maybe it needs to get changed. Or if its rattling you hear take off your lower heat shield.

Thanx 240kid, lets see if i can be more specific about the 3rd noise. It sounds like if you would rub 2 metal pieces together only a little deeper of a sound, and when i step on the clutch it goes away, but when i release it, the noise returns. I dont know if thats a good way to explain it, but its the first thing that came to mind. And about the fan clutch, (I may sound stupid when i ask this) do you know how much it runs for?

the fan clutch runs for $80 at napa, and i heard the cheaper autozone ones dont last long before they lock up again. it is pretty easy to change, just make sure you put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator so you dont accidentaly hit it with a wrench or the fan, radiators are very fragile.

let me think about the other one for like an hour, i need to brain storm

and like 2bn_s13 said, change pads first. and dont forget you have to screw the rear pistons in, you cant just push them like you can the fronts.

if you have any questions at all, dont hesitate to ask

1. Check you brake fluid, if it's low, the light will come on. Otherwise check the sensor in the master cylinder reservoir and the switch at the e-brake that turns the light on.

2. Your fan has a viscous clutch built into it. When the fluid inside it heats up, it spins the fan. When it's cold, the fan doesn't spin. It's getting hotter outside now, so your fan is staying on more. Don't worry about it. If you are worried, get rid of it and put an electric fan in there.

3. It sounds like your release bearing to me. It makes contact with the clutch when the clutch is engaged(pedal is up). If the bearings in it are going out, it will make noise that goes away when you disengage the clutch. It probably won't hurt anything. Just replace it whenever you do a clutch job.

By the way 240kid, what do you mean by " change pads first. and dont forget you have to screw the rear pistons in, you cant just push them like you can the fronts?"

The 240sx has no sensors that detect pad wear. Only the standard wear indicators. Not to say that you don't need to keep an eye on your pads as you always should at regular intervals, but the cause of the brake light is not the pads. AFAIK, the only two things that trigger the brake light is low fluid or if the parking brake is engaged.

And the rear calipers do require that you screw the pistons in the counter=clockwise direction. You can try to push them in, but they will not go in unless you break it. You can either buy a tool that you stick on a socket wrnech extension or you can use a pair of needlenose pliers, but it's much simpler if you have the tool.

1st part: yes the light would go on in my car even when the handle is slightly up 1 click... the contacts in the switch are open...also heard that parking light would go on w/ or w/out the battery light as well...just so the system can alert u to a failing battery/wire/loose belt..etc.

2nd part: u screw the pistons in CLOCKWISE to make room for new, thicker pads... doing it counter-clock would make the piston fall out! & i agree w/ that brake tool; soo much easier to use than needlenose to concentrate on pushing it while turning...:ylsuper

Like ziggy said, that sound with your clutch that goes away when you push it in is your release bearing, mine was doing the exact same thing.

i dont know exactly what makes the brake light come on, but my rear brakes were shot and it made the light come on, i assume because it has something to do with the ebrake and since its all messed up it may trip the sensor. my rear calipers were shot, and leaking brake fluid, my pads were gone too. so i guess it could any one of those problems, heh, but i would think it would be in the rear.

my fan clutch is about to go as well. $80 sounds like a decent price for a new one, you could also look around the stores section of this forum for someone selling a used one. all you need is the clutch itself, the fan blades are used again. go to the search section up top, specify for the nico stores parts/equipment section, and search for mechanical fan, or clutch fan for a 240sx.
