Aight boys, right now i got about $1600 to work with. I was planning on doing a 5-speed swap now and in the future rebuild my KA and slap on the Greddy turbo kit. But now I'm thinking to myself why not save some more money and get an SR. That way I'll have a more powerful engine and a 5-speed at a cheaper price. The way i see it

Turbo KA rebuild + 5 speed = ~$4000SR swap = ~$3000

Since the SR swap seems cheaper I'm leaning towards that a little bit more, but theres one thing thats keeping me from doing it. That would be the magic words EMMISIONS TESTING. since my car is OBD II it would be impossible for the SR to pass.

So what u guys think, swap the transmission now and build up the KA in the future or save them pennies and get the SR swap done ?

I would say go KA it is a little less common than the SR, plus you know the motor is freshly rebuilt, with an SR you wouldn't be sure, may end up having to rebuild it later. Plus the emmisions thing.

You can get KA trannys for $200-$300 each, throw in another $200 for random parts needed, and voila, manual.

Then you can start saving up for the big toys

I'm doing the research too and I think $3000 for an SR swap is a little conservative. Try the $4000 to $5000 range, and thats with some home depot fixes and cut corners.

He's right. Don't expect to get a working SR swap for $3000. And until the Greddy turbo kit gets CARB certified (I'm pretty sure it hasn't yet, unless it just happened and I haven't seen it), it is just as illegal as an SR swap in California.

i couldn't agree more i've thought about this for many hours, u dont know what you are really getting with a SR, then u have to deal with finding parts ect too. with a KA-t that is rebuilt u know what you have and u'll be producing more power. and smog is a pain haha know any friendly techs? well hope that helps
