Hey guys something unexpected happened to me today. My dealer where I take my car in for service called and and said they wanted to buy my car. As I don't have much car buying experience with dealers is this just a scam to get me in a bigger loan with a newer car? Is there a possibility where i could actually get a great deal on a new car if the dealer is desperate?

The car in question is a 2007 BMW 335xi sedan. I just bought it last October and i really love the car. It was a CPO car with 13k miles. Car has 20K miles now and all maintenance has been free and up to date. Got the car OTD at 30k.

The guy sounded like he wanted to make a deal. I think he might have a buyer who is looking for my model. But also is sounds like he might just be trying to sell a new car. Hell if they give my what i paid for the car, and let me get a another CPO or new beemer below invoice i might jump on it.

So i am hoping the more experienced members here could shed some light on this possible new car selling tactic. Any and all suggestions or experiences welcome.

The old saying is if it sounds to good to be true, then it likely is. He's doing an old trick, and is trying to steer you to another transaction so he can make another commission off you. He might tell you'll get a great price, but remember your replacement vehicle's price (and itsmarkup) has not been established yet, so you can be sure any premium you get for your car will be worked into whatever you buy from him next.

Yeah buddie that thought had crossed my mind. Tell then i will give them my car and 10k for a E92 M3. Or my car and 10k for a low mileage 6 series. I wouldn't mind a 135i coupe though. Nice little cars the 135's are.

Yeah bubba those are wise words. I was feeling the same way. I think the 3 series is due for a revamp in 2012 so i thought they may be trying to clear there 2010/11 3 series off the lot. But like you said he probably trying to pull a fast one.

Yes.

Did he say something like "cars like yours are in demand"? It's an old salesman thing to get you to come in to sell you something else you can't afford. I was in sales long enough to learn like 80% of the tricks.

But please... troll the s*** out of him as punishment for bothering you... post results on youtube.

Because of the economy people are keeping their cars longer and this is causing a low inventory of used cars on dealer lots. This is one reason, the other is they need to move the 11s for the new 2012 coming and must move inventory off the lot. Maybe why the Kia dealership wanted to buy my 08 coupe for 19k to get me into a new vehicle. Whatever they tell you just remember they have to make a profit. It took me 2 seconds to tell them not interested.

Do you remember the topic about the one VW Passat sold in one month? Dealers must move their inventory, and used cars are not included in car selling statistics.

We are close to September and for dealers it is time to sell new cars like crazy. I had an experience with a Mercedes Benz dealer. Before going there, we were looking for the VW Jetta, a manual one red color, and the seller didn't want to go for under 25k. The car had leather seats, backup camera, and was diesel.

Around the corner is a Mercedes Benz dealer, and a manual c300 series was parked in the middle of a circle. It had a big sign saying that was $9,000 off its price. From 38k was on sale for 29k. The car was 0 miles, year 2010, and was sold at that price because was the last one of that model and year and the dealer was getting rid off it.

The salesman approached us asking if we were inrterested in that car. I made a loose coment that we have just visited the VW dealer and that incredibly, for $4,000 less a Jetta was sold over there. My comment was directed to compare how close was the price of a small VW to that Mercedes Benz. The salesman smiled and left the place. A few minutes later he came back, and told me that the manager may agree in selling the Mercedes for 25k.

We were surprised with such an offer. That dealer really wanted to take that vehicle out of their property. As the salesman saw me with some doubts, he gave me his card to call him if I decided to buy the car. Three days later, when I finally convinced the family that such a Mercedes was a very good deal, we passed by thru the Mercedes Benz dealer, but the car was gone.

I can tell you this, sometimes is true that some offers are too good to be true, but sometimes we lose the chance to take advantage of very good deals.

Just appear to the dealer and check what they have to offer, you may lose a half of a day, but you are not obligated to trade and buy anything, perhaps the whole thing is a trick, or perhaps you may come out with a better vehicle at a very cheap price

The Honda dealership here called my folks a few months ago wanting to buy back the 2004 Pilot that they had gotten a few months prior. I guess Pilots are just selling by the boatload and apparently my folks got a pretty damn good deal on the car when they bought it.

Dealers like foot traffic, especially if they can sense someone with not a lot of self control. Same type of offer on our 09 Escape.

I get an offer in the mail every three months from the local Nissan dealership to buy my Frontier and set me up with a sweet deal on a new one. I tell them if I'm gonna have to pay one more dime in fuel / payments / insurance then that deal isn't sweet enough. I also had a n00b salesman call me one night to try to set me up with an unnecessary maintenance package. It happens, that's the nature of being in sales. Just decline politely and ask to be removed from their telemarketing list. Make sure to get his / her name too so if you do get a return call you can get it taken care of.

yeah that is a scam. I kept getting emails/newsletters from toyota telling me that my 1986 MR2 with 140000 miles is in high demand. "we will pay you 500 dollars on top of trade in value for the car." so basically they would give me 500 dollars for the car. :frown:
