Yep, my dad finally got one. He used to have a '76 camaro w/ a 350 in it, so it was pretty powerful and he loved it. But then, because my mom got pregnant, they sold the camaro and got something else. So, for 20 years my dad has wanted one. He wanted a red z28, auto with t-tops. Well I found a silver z28 w/ t-tops for sale just down the road from us, and got the number off the for-sale sign. I called, got some info, told my dad, and now 6 days later, we have a 1996 z28 with 93k miles, auto, t-tops, and oh wow what a stereo. Its just a stock bose, but compared to the crap in my 240, it sounds amazing. So anyway, I thought I would share both my and my dads excitement w/ my NICO family.

dude, no offense, does your dad have a mullet? if not he should grow one and wear it for just ONE day and ride around with the T Tops off, that's what I'd do if I had a Camaro:D

Hehe, Mr1der . . . was about to say something about a mullet. :-) Camaros, Mustangs, and Firebirds aren't slow cars with their V8's and all, but I could never see myself buying one, just because of the handling aspects. Now that new GTO on the other hand . . . just as quick in a straight-line, looks a million times better on the inside, and there's got to be potential with its independent rear suspension. :-)

Oh, and congrats to your dad man . . . it's a great car to show people who have cars like ours that they aren't built for drag-racing from the factory. :-)

actually a camaro z28 handles very very well. You would be owned in autocross or road racing by one becasue of their power and handling capabilities.

Have you seen performance data. Fast in a straight line is about all it does well. IIRC, it pulled .78G's on a skidpad. It probably turns about as well as an Impala.

Camaros, Mustangs, and Firebirds all handle OK . . . but give a 240, 300ZX, Supra, etc just as much power, and which one do you think would win in an auto-x course? Just my opinion . . . if I ever wanted a drag car, a Z28 or Formula Firebird would be my first choice though. :-)

I know the GTO only pulls 0.78 g's on the skidpad according to the MT review, but it also seems to be more tuned for a soft ride, according to the review. They said it felt great to drive, even though its numbers weren't great . . . and just like the other muscle cars, I'm sure someone will develop some handling parts for it. The SVT Mustang Cobra had/has IRS . . . amazing stuff there, I'm sure the GTO can be built to match it. That's why I said potential, hehe . . . :-)

.78 is weak as hell, my car with decent tires can hit .85...

the fox body GT did it with .8 The camaro does it a little better than the mustang if I remember right, not bad handling at all for an out dated car still using a solid axle, they're still very capable.

Don't ever bring up the whole curves arguement, some old road racer might kick your *** in a first gen Z-28

First gen's are pimp, just because they are first gen camaro's. But, during the '70's, most everything was ugly imo. Not *everything*, but alot of it.

Give your pops props for staying focused and sticking to what he truly wanted. That's cool that you were able to help him turn such a long term dream into reality.

701/2 was my favorite camaro ever, and it could be had with a 454 in Baldwin Motion trim, there might have been a 454 SS version as well, can't remember on that one but there was a 396SS, I just thought the split bumper front end was so cool...

Power makes almost anything capable . . . look at the Ford SVT Lightning. Granted, it has suspension upgrades too, but it's still a truck. :-) Give me a 240, 300ZX, Supra, RX-7, et cetra with 300+ HP anyday, and I'll bet anything, given equal drivers, those Japanese cars would win. Of course, my stock 240 would get its *** whipped, but that's more due to the overwhelming power advantage than anything else . . . pit me against a V6 Camaro/Mustang/Firebird, and then see what happens. :-)

I was never a really big fan of the IROC until I saw one at the shop. I think it was a late 80's model, you know the really square looking one? Painted a deep turquiouse blue, jet black tinted windows, tastefully understated Centerlines with wide *** tires in the back. And, the reason it was in the shop being tuned in the first place... a full blown, TEC3 controlled, direct port nitrous system.

There was just something evil about that car. :ylsuper
