91' 240sx hatch

the engine cranks and everything... so its not the starter, alternator, or battery... ive pedaled and put it to the floor and still no start... after a good 30 seconds of cranking the engine there is a good smell of gas coming from the engine... so there is probably flooding...

a lil' info on the car... burns oil but passed smog! smog said the timing was 18 BTDC... since it burns oil it needs a lil' oil

What could it be? Needs new spark plugs? Has this happend to u?

if it burns oil then you might need a new seal or piston rings etc, and the burning oil will create a black build up in the cylinder and especially on the spark plugs faster than anything.

Yea, sounds like a serious engine problem. I would start saving for the sr.

Are you getting spark? Could be a bad coil.

I had a problem with my car cranking and not starting... It was my timing. I found out it was 180 degrees off. Check that do a search on how to reset timing to top dead center and go from there.

I would be looking into WHY it advanced to. it does so for a reason.

gl, you have more issues than a tune up will cure.....

try a little squirt of ether and see if it pops.If it does then you know it's fuel related.

Quote »I'm done with this car!My car was idling like crap the other day so I figured since I just got it, it may have been awhile since anyone changed the oil out. I decided to go ahead and change the oil. I used Mobile 1 synthentic oil like I was reccomended on here. Anyways, I drain out the oil and noticed it was extremely dark and even after 10 minutes of draining, it was still coming out. I decided to go ahead and flush it to make sure all the bad stuff got out. I hooked up the hose, ran water through the engine, started it up and was waiting for the water to come out clean (The engine never went above idle so I was told this would be ok). Anyways, About 3 minutes into this, then engine starts shaking and shuts off. I figured it was all cleaned out so I plugged it up, added the oil and figured I was ready to go. WRONG! The car won't freaking start now. This car has been nothing but trouble for me, I think I am done with it.[/quote]

i found out that the ka24de engines rockers are hydraulically operated... and since my engines burning oil, the oil was low and wasnt giving enough oil and pressure to operate the rockers correctly... so sine i found this out i was able to drive it to the mechanic to get a tune-up...

Im planning on new valves and piston rings... not a whole rebuild tho!... just enough to last me and sell for a good price after my SRswap

if your gonna pay to have that done, have them throw some new pistons and rods in there and save your money for ka-t. it would be cheaper and you can toss a t25 on a ka for less than a 1k easy.

okay don't listen to these fools talking about kat and srs. right now the problem is your car isn't starting.

it cranks, that's goodyou say the injectors are goodso ur one step away check your sparks plugs see if they're good

u can use either but i wouldnt recommend it just take off ur sparkplugs and tell us how they look if they're full of carbon etc.

well im not paying to have it done im doing it myself... and im not getting a ka-t im getting an SR... and how would i be saving if pistons and rods costs like $200 each... that would cost me close to $1600!

By not using forged internals. Just get OE style cast internals.

well my oil was low and i started it and it ran right away! it turns out that the rockers are hydraulically operated, so if there isnt enough oil there isnt enough pressure to operate them... but this means im gunna have to keep putting oil in my car

That seems completely inaccurate.

The level of the oil, and the pressure at which it is contained, are not related in the way you seem to think.

There is something else wrong.

Perhaps the passages of the rockers are blocked, due to lack of maintenance. (running with low/dirty oil in this case)

it should be around 800ish. thats what most people on here have spent for internals. and thats much cheaper than an sr. not to meantion it makes more power. im not hating on the sr. hell i have one, but for you, about 1k to build your ka would be cheaper in the long run. and if you already have it torn down, then it saves you work too.

i got a 91 240 and its kinda doin the same. it cranks but won't start. i know it has spark and i know its getting gas, i also set the timing according to the chilton book. i'm not convinced about the timing though (whether its right or not). i've set the timing numerous different ways, i should have come close by now any way. is this oil pressure thing legit? i'm gonna go check it out. anyone got any other ideas?
