my car wont start....

i have a 95 240 with the stock engine. the water pump literally disintegrated while the previous owner was driving it. it destroyed the fan and dented the radiator. the car will not start. it is getting fuel and spark and the plugs look good and there is no water in the oil or on the pistons. could this incedent have knocked the timing off? what do i do to check it to see if it is off and how do i fix it. if that is not the problem could there be some sensor preventing startup? also if i replace the engine can i use a ka from an altima? he did not drive the car when it blew. he pulled off to the side and it died. any ideas would be great.

i assume the car is turning over? timing could be off, does it not start as a result of the water pump thing or has it been sitting for a while also

it has been sitting for a month it turns over easy.
