I have a '91 Q45 and it ran out of gas, I pushed it to the gas station and put about 7$ of gas in it and it won't start. How do I get it to start? Did I not add enough gas? Thanks:(

Running the tank low stresses the fuel pump leading to premature failure of the unit. Running it dry is a good way ruin it. No fuel warning light on the Q?

Keeping at least 3 gallon reserve is the easiest preventitive maintenance you can perform.

dkill is right, turn it to the 'on' position, *not* 'start'. Listen for the pump priming for a couple of seconds, then turn to 'off' & repeat 4-5 times. This should prime the pump again. If you do not hear a faint 'hmmmmmmmm' from the trunk area when in the 'on' position, then you have more problems than a lack of fuel, like a bad pump or fuel pump control unit, FPCU.

The pump sits high in the tank, the best policy is a refuel at no more than 1/3 tank [14 gallons used].

Refilling on empty [before the warning] will cost you in the long run in diminished pump life.

the pump motor sits very high--above 50% level in the tank.

It is designed to be cooled by the fuel flowing through it. It's not excess heat from low fuel level that gets to them. Its 'powerful' solvents in some fuel system cleaners (and ethanol & MTBE) that attack the pump rollers and roller cage, causing them to loose their smoothness. This increases noise and current draw, destroys pumping efficiency (lowers flow of excess fuel that cools the pump motor) and eventually failure.

The Q45 DOES have a low fuel warning light that is separate from the fuel level gauge. It is capacitance based--when the fuel level drops below the probe--capacitance changes drastically, electronics trigger the low fuel warning light.

If you run it empty, you have to turn the ignition on for 5sec then off, repeat 10 times --to refill the fuel lines and develop pressure for the fuel injectors.

I've not run mine out of fuel, but anytime when changing filter, pump, injectors, etc, it's standard procedure.
