Is it common for a 1991 to turn off while driving?

I was getting on to the freeway and my car turned off. The check engine light comes on and just about every time I push in the clutch the car dies. Now i've learned to push the gas and the brake at the same time while pushing the clutch in, so that my engine is constantly revving.

someone told me it could be my gas sensor and that it was common in that car and year. Could that be it and if it is, I heard it was pretty damn expensive to fix, true? If anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

wow..i thought my car was the only one that did it....well mine doesn't do it anymore..but one problem it still has is that whenever i fill up my tank...it runs like ****...the idle surges, and when i come to a stop i have to keep gassing it to keep the rpms up or else it'll die on me... not tryin to steal your thread..but when i first bought my car my motor always died when i either put the car in neutral or the clutch in on the freeway...but not on the regular streets..

Had the same problem with my 93 when I first got it... Made me very angry cuz it just wouldnt drive at times then it became worse where everytime I touched the clutch it shut right off and all the check engine , oil , super hicas lights all turned on.

Heres what you do to fix it, Clean the IACV basically whats happening is that the iacv (Idle Air Control valve) has gotten dirty and isnt letting enough air into the engine so when you step off the throttle and onto the clutch your rpms are dropping too low and the engine stalls and shuts off.Cleaning the Iacv is no easy task even finding it is tough then you have to get to it under the throttle body. The quick thing to do is clean the throttle body and disconnect the aiv valve.

There are pictures of all these things and detailed steps on how to get access to them and actually take them off and locate them on the forums just search.

Hope it helps out.

have any of you pulled your AIVs out? I have to put my AIV back in every year to pass inspection, and that sonofabitch will stall at every traffic light, every time i put on the brake and push the clutch in, until i pull it back out.
