my car stutters when i step on the the gas pedal almost as if its not getting enough gas. it also has uneven power expenditure sometimes it takes off sometimes it just barely moves. also it makes a loud clicking sound sometimes when I step on the gas pedal. I have changed the air filter, the oil and oil filter, the fuel filter, I have run system cleaner through it fuel injector cleaner as well I do not know what to do. it is a nissan maxima 1993 not sure which engine it has though.

Is it an SE or a GXE?

If it's an SE, check your spark plugs and coils. If it's a GXE, check your plugs, wires, and distributor.

Look on the top of the firewall. There will be a small squarish metal plaque with the VIN and some other info on the vehicle. It'll have your engine code shown on it. If it says "VG30e" you have a GXE. If it says "VE30DE" you have an SE.

The VG30e in the GXE looks like this:

The VE30DE in the SE looks like this:

There wasn't really a "cheaper" Max with the 3rd gen. Just slightly more lux or sportier. No base model, though.

The VG30e has a mechanical distributor that may be your problem. The VE30DE has individual ignition coils that could also cause your problem.

I had a similar problem. Turns out it was just a spark plug wire that came off the distributor cap. Check the simple stuff first.
