So I've got a SR20DET with an OBX straight-through exhaust. It's okay, not too loud, not too quiet. It will be changed when I have the appropriate $$$. Anyway, that's not what's bugging me. What's bugging me is the front of my car. When I stand outside and listen, all I can hear is the belt driven fan whir. It kind of sounds like a dying airplane. I dunno, how would I go about making it sound cooler?

get an elctric fan to take away the 'whoosh' sound.

what do you want it to sound like...a V6 or something?

your OBX is gay. get a quality exhaust system and you'll be more pleased with the purr.

He wasn't even talking about his exhaust system, and if you read his post, you would have noticed he said he is going to get a better exhaust system when he has the money. Stupid noob

Take the fan off. I did that on my KA and what a difference it made. It actually sounded like a car again. :D But my car is sitting about 400 miles away from me in a garage right now. It's so sad.

4Felix has been on here since last July, you on the other hand, have only been registered for 2 months. Stupid noobs flaming veteran member.:rolleyes Anyway, changing exhaust isn't going to change the sound of the engine. In fact, I can't think of a way to change the way the engine sounds at idle. Are you running the stock airbox? Changing that to a cone filter will definately change the way the engine sounds while driving. What exactly do you want it to sound like? A diesel?

Sircnay make sure your belts are tight, and are you running the SR fan shroud or not? There really isn't much you can do to change the sound of the stock fan without just taking it off.

Maybe replace the fan Clutch? When they go bad the fan is pulling air ALL the time. I just yanked out the whole mech. fan assembly and shroud, then replaced with an electric unit. BIG difference. anyway, good luck

Not sure how it would change the idle sound, but an Injen or AEM intake would sound cool while you're driving around. I think the unfortunate reality may be that an inline 4 doesn't really have an impressive/memorable sound. People say that the 4 cylinder boxer engine in the WRX sounds pretty cool, but I've never really hard anyone comment on the sound of a plain old inline 4.

Yeah there's an electric fan, but there is also the stock pulley driven fan. I dunno, it just sounds so pathetic seeing as I got a baby monster under there. Blah, maybe I'll put a big kazoo in my Intake piping. That'll sound sweet. And yes, my exhaust WILL go, as soon as I get the essentials down and start getting more power the first thing to go is the exhaust. Hell, it's already starting to rust (minorly, but rust is rust).

Ya, I saw an add for something that simulates the sound of a turbo system for like $40. I really dont know what you expect us to tell you? You want your car to sound more aggresive? Put money into. The more mods you put on it the more aggresive it will sound. Altimaman- 4Felix is right. My 3" GP Sports is sound loud that my engine could be exploding and i wouldny be able to tell. It doesnt matter where the sound is coming from, as long as it covers the other sound.

It might a faulty fan clutch. Thats whats wrong with mine. The fan clutch has pretty much failed. Turn the car off and try and spend the fan. If the fan does not spin freely, then it's your fan clutch. Get that replaced and the noise should go away.

I know on mine it would spin starting my hand at 12 to about 12:05-12:15 b4 stopping> Thats b/c mine is really bad! If you can spin yours from 12 to 12 before it starts to look up, then you should be aright for about another year or so but i wouldn't recomend you drive like that for a year because it's stress the hell out or your motor resulting into slower engine response and a lacken engine performance.

Or you can take the entire fan out (including fan clutch) and replace it with electric fans.
