I just bought a '91 240SX, which ran fine until I left the DMV. I had just filled up the tank beforehand, and from there is when I started smelling gas fumes in the car. I went to DMV, got my plate, then I went to go start my car. It would turn over and run for half a second before shutting off. After a few tries, I got it to start by pumping the gas while i turned the key. I was able to get it home fine, other than the fumes inside the car. Does anyone know the problem??

Any help would be appreciated. Please and thank you.

Pull the 4 bolt access cover in your trunk for the fuel pump and cycle the key a little and see if fuel is squirting out of one of the lines... Those hoses get old and brittle and crack and you might not necessarily see a leak on the ground cause it can pool on top of the tank. If you have inadequate fuel delivery, the car can die. Just a thought, something worth looking at.

^Agreed. Definitely sounds like a fuel leak somewhere.

So, it turned out to be the seal between the fuel pump and the tank. I got a new one in, but I'm still having the same issue. I'll give it a few days to air out, but the engine will still stop right after starting sometimes.
