I am sort of new to the ca. Can cams and other head work be done to draw the power band all the way to the top? I know they can help but do they make a huge difference? Ive heard of people revving to 9k with this motor, but would it make sense since power begins to drop after 6k? When shops and stuff build race motors generally what rpm do they stop at?

Power starts dropping on these engines for multiple reasons. Cam profiles, valve springs, valves, knock retard, turbocharger, and ignition retard all have the ability to cause power to drop off and at different rpms. A stock CA18DET is not going to rev to 9k, but can get between 8.2k-8.5k depending on condition of the engine. And if you're doing the with the a T25 or T28, you're waisting your bearing life because those turbos are flat on their faces after about 7k rpm give or take a few hundred rpm.

Bigger turbos require more rpm to get them going which means power will come further into the powerband which results in a little more power at a higher rpm than stock. But the physical engine itself will still keep you at a specified rpm range for max power if you leave the valve train stock. CA18 valve trains float in the 8.2-8.7rpm range depending on the condition of the engine. But there is no power to be had here. Just some more rpm to help the bigger T3/T4 turbo and not the T2small ones.

I have a set of HKS camshafts in g/f's CA and the car is a bit more consistent at holding the rpm at around 8.7k rpm. Haven't gone to the dyno to see the effects of the cams because the car was wrecked not too long after I had built it. I also have a motor that is built and will be revved in the 9k-10k range as this is what was designed to do. And the beauty of the standalone is that I can toy around with where I want the timing to be retarded at or where I want the rev limiter set at. In my case it will be set 9750rpm which is the max that SDS designed my ecu to allow.

BTW cuzan0, nice dyno figures! Those figers puts you in the ballpark of the SR gang and possibly waxing them as well. Great job;) and I mean it.

yeah the numbers i puller are ok. i just wanted to see where im at and see how much more i can go. well the run went like this ok i hit 206whp at 11psi so i upped the bust at 14psi i really should have went 18psi on the 2nd run!!! i should be around 230-245whp at 18psi i asked the guy for another run but he couldnt cause there were other cars wanting to go on the dyno and i didnt have anymore money lol.... looks like all the T2 turbos drop at 5800 rpm and if you want more power on higher rpms you need a bigger turbo like a t3/t4 just like boostboy said but i think if you hit 230-245whp thats the max power you'll get, cause if your using the stock mafs it wont let you flow enough air to pass 250whp mark unless you use a standalone and remove the crappy mafs or upgrade to a z32.

oh yeah!!! hey boostboy how much is the sds system everything i would need to run my motor with a 2bar map???

A complete system like that would run you just over $1200.

Hey cuzan0, I'm wanting the Apex'i intake, but I didn't know if the MAFS adapter for the SR will fit the CA MAFS. If it does please let me know, as I have no air filter on it right now. Thanks!
