Hi all,

I was able to get the car running. It turns out that I must have had a CA18DE exhaust cam, because I advanced the timing on that cam 8 degrees and now it seems to work pretty good. I've ordered the correct cam, but I'm not upset because I'm just glad it works.

I plan on putting the DE cam on the intake side later when I've got all the other bugs worked out.

Anyway, I made a short video about my car and engine. Sorry the quality sucks, but I might make a better one later.

Like I said in the video, the timing belt tensioner failed causing the timing belt to get loose.

As far as pictures go, I can't remember if I've posted this before, but here's some pictures from when the engine was first put in the car:

There's a couple of differences now. I have the air filter in a better place and a BOV now.

You deserve it "man". I can appreciate the hard-work you put into your special car and I know you were grinning like a little school girl who had just gotten her first kiss; and especially from the little boy who she had a crush on ;) . Boost-on my brother..... :badger .

Thanks for the kind words. I took it out for a quick drive. I've noticed a sound that appears to be coming from the intake side cam gear. I'm using adjustable cam gears, but I don't think that matters.

Did I overtighten the timing belt (which is new)? Or is this normal and I'm just being paranoid? Something else?

Please be honest. I can get over a loss of pride, but a new engine is expensive. I really don't want to wreck another rebuilt engine...

could be the drive belts too... take them off and run it for a minute to see if the noise is gone
don't run it for long because you have no water pump ;)

sounds like the lower timing cover rubbing on the crank pulley to me. If it's coming from the exhaust side cam gear area, you better make sure everything with the upper timing cover is like it should be. There are supposed to be 2 locating dowls in the head, are they in there? Do you ahve the rear cover on? Did you use all the bolts to put the cover back on?

I love you're car and the link to you're site.

I'm preparing my 74 opel and a ca18det is going in next winter.

Thanks for posting an hope you find the noise soon.
I agree it sounds like a belt rubbing agains something.

Thanks for the kind words. If any of you are ever in San Antonio, look me up and we'll go for a ride. I'm at 9 lbs. of boost now. Once I get this engine is broken in I plan on running 15 lbs, so it should be fun.

Anyway, it looks like it was just the belt. I removed it and the sound went away.

Like I said, I've had such crappy luck that I can't help being paranoid. Better safe than sorry, though.

Thanks again,

Darian

PS What kind of Opel is getting the swap?

That's really cool. I'd never heard of this car and so I did some Googling. Looks like a lot of fun in a lightweight car.

Keep us posted!
