This is going to be an ongoing project. I will start with some pics of the car before I got to it... This is a good picture from my brother's era with the car. This is the Wing he put on the car The old motor that he blew not sure if this is number 1,2 or 3 he went through, But that is the why I have the car now. His old seats that a "friend" of his sold out from under him The rising sun hood he did

This about wraps up the car before it stated to get modded by my brother.

looks good, are you going to stick with that engine platform or go with a different one?

Next he decided he was going to gut the interior and stitch weld the seams and hide the wiring. The welder we have is a wire welder using flux wire with two settings hi and low. So please don't flame the welds, we do the best we can with what we have.

His welding

Engine bay after he painted it

Another pic of his welding and paint

The interior after he painted and tucked most of the wires

Fiberglasses the cracks in the dash and painted it.. I plan on laying a vinyl over this I don't like the white.

Oops missed some wires I will have to fix those.

After he cut the seat braces I will have to take those the rest of the way out as well.

Random pic of my brother working on the car

The switch panel I will be remaking this piece out of a heavier gauge metal and making it fit better to the trim

And now some more pics of the interior when he was done with it

He has done some pretty decent work to this point for not being a mechanic and this being the first time he has done anything like this on his own.He installed a built SR20DET that was bad when he bought it

It is going to get a RB20DET with a Aluminum flywheel, upgraded clutch, GT3071BB turbo, 550cc injectors and a NJistune board when all is said and done.

Again my brothers choice... They will be fully functioning switches though, including fuel cut, Fans, starter... The fuel cut is required for FD rules and regulations.

The eventual plan is to have a two tone paint scheme on the exterior with Silver and Black, and the interior will be the Blue you see here and Black vinyl. I am not goinng to be driving down the road in NV and be blinded by the sun from the white dash.

Now on to the work I have done so far to get the spots he missed and rework some things he did.

Retucked the wiring and removed all the Automatic seat belt wiring from the harness.

Straightened the upper core support and welded the lower for additional strength

Hit the door seams with spot welds which have been ground down to allow the seals to fit.

Fully welded the front strut towers for additional strength to help hold any lateral g's from drifting

Removed some more of the rear seat bracing and welded the rear strut tower better

All the meanwhile reworking some of the electrical issues and other areas of concern... Next project is to seal all the holes in the chassis/firewall

Your welds are horrible. Starving children in African countries can weld better than that.

Your car is a smurf. If you paint the bottom half red, you may call it Papa. If you put a giant pair of glasses on it, you may call it Brainy.

Also, fail on not masking things properly.

Hey, it's a learning experience, but most people actually correct their mistakes. Just a suggestion.

I love the way people actually read what is typed... Lol they just look at pictures and comment.

If you read you will see where Most of the work to date was not done by me... You will also see that in the first post the welder is not the best (wire welder with flux wire no gas) so of course the welds are not going to be the greatest and you know what I will admit I am not the greatest welder but I am improving.

Looks are not what is most important to me on this car, I am more concerned with strength and having a solid chassis.

Yeah, these cars will fall apart if you try to drift without the stitch welds. I've seen it happen at least 10 times.

Yes you did mention your brother did the welding but this may help you as well.

I actually learned how to weld with flux core on my mig welder. I have a Lincoln 140SP MIG welder. Trust me your welds will get better with more practice even if without gas. For 90 bucks I got me a tank and a full fillup of 75/25 Ar/o2. I suggest you get some gas and wiring too. BTW: you do have the right polarity setting right???? AND make sure to grind any area you are welding to otherwise your ground will suck and that = s***ty welds.

It is not just about the strut towers being the weak link in the chassis. Yes I have personally seen them break loose and seen the front wheel laying almost sideways because of it... The reason behind this is also to help cut out any body flex.

This car is both of ours, it will have alot of my parts and hard work as well as his. The chassis is his... The engine, transmission, FMIC, seats, Diff, axles, suspension shoot pretty much everything except the chassis will be mine.

I can see a huge difference between his welds and mine. I appreciate the helpful comments. I have not checked the polarity myself but it does seem to weld ok once the metal is clean and the wire speed is set right. Another thing that hinders my Welding is the ability to only use one hand. The helmet we have is more of a mask. Yes yes yes I know I should go spend the $80-100 bucks on an actual helmet and that would make things so much easier.I always try to make sure the metal is clean. The issue I am running into is I have to stop and re-clean the metal due to not having gas.

This is true. About the mask, I got me an actual mask but without the auto light/darkening. So, IT SUCKS!! Its a Clark mask and it was only $20 so I said F' it. I got fed up with it so now I use the little face shield that came with the welder package. Its one of those which you must hold up against your face with one hand. I got used to welding with one hand only. Flux core does suck, especially the ugly white shade it leaves behind. Good luck and don't let idiots discourage you with negative critisism.
