Had the same intermittent problem on my KA motor before I rebuilt it. Sounds like a rich condition caused by a faulty O2 sensor. The black on the plugs is excess carbon which is caused by too rich a mixture. When the onboard ECM stops getting a reference signal from the oxygen sensor, it goes to a full-rich air/fuel mixture. Bet you have black smoke from you exhaust when it is running like crap. Go get a good aftermarket sensor (Bosch, should be about $20) and I'll bet you will be ready to go.

Try shooting some carb cleaner into the throttle body. Did it start and run for a second or two? If so you have some sort of fuel condition. If not your spark is probably weak or non existant.

From your first post it sounds like you either got bad gas or have no spark(water or bad gas can give you wet looking plugs)

You're not going to believe this--but if you have Bosch plugs that may be the problem! I just had a similar thing happen to me and I took it to my mech and he said the Bosch plugs I had in there were the cause of my problems! He told me to use NGK. As soon as he swapped out my plugs, the car started running fine, he did some minor tweaking and it's purring again!!
