you might need a new catalytic converter. But that is a expensive repair.

If you take the smog test results to a qualified repair facility they would probably be able to find out why you don't pass smog and fix it.

OR i have heard pouring alcohol into you gas tank right before the smog test will help you pass. Try that at your own risk.

OR maybe use E85 gasoline its mostly ethanol (corn based alcohol) and should have less emissions but may make your car run like crap.

96 ought to be a plug-in OBDII test, no sniff required. What codes are you throwing? If you don't know, get them read at Autozone or somewhere like that.

if you could post your numbers from the smog sheet, that will greatly help in giving you some starting points. cant do much with out em.post em up and ill give you a hand

throwing a cat at it is just masking the problem and burning money.in cali, even obd2 cars go on the sniffer. pending on where you are, its a TSI(Two speed idle)test or a dynometer test
