My 2nd Gear Problem...

I have an automatic 1990 240sx. I dunno how all this happened but it has. usually when you start the car and apply the brake you can move the shifter to drive/reverse/whatever. but i started it recently and i apply the brake and can't move the shifter without pushing the shiftlock button first.

another problem is the car seems to stay in second gear only. so its sluggish till it gets to the speeds second gear should be. what can i do to fix this?

are the two problems related? i need to fix this soon.

I'm hoping to have this transmission fixed for now for cheap. but i think the whole transmission is bad...hopefully not though.

When's the last time you had a transmission fluid flush? I had similar problems with my old Honda Accord, and getting a fluid change solved 'em.

Check out your local oil change places... most of them offer a powered transmission flush that swaps out something like 90% of the fluid... that should probably do the trick with an A/T

If it is always in second gear it may be in 'limp' mode. I dont know much about the 240 AT, but most ATs will go into limp mode when there is a major pronlem. Its supposed to let you know that something is wrong and allow you to still drive it to a shop to get it looked at.

it still didn't work >.< . I think my whole transmission is messed up. Now that i pay attention to it more i think i when i put the car into 1st its actually in 2nd...and when i move the shifter to 2nd its actually in 3rd.
