is this part of the diagnosing from the engine swap or was it working before and now gone kaput?

If it was working before and now gone kaput, I'd first check if there's power going to the ignition coil. If there is then move onto the distributor (first check the cap and rotor, as those are easiest to check and replace).

If you're in the process of diagnosing, how did you do the wiring?

Ignition coil needs to be checked first.. take the wire off the distributor that comes from the coil, lay the wire next to a screw on the valve cover (get it real close) and when you turn the car over, see if it arcs. If it does, repeat the process with each of the wires off your distributor. If you have trouble getting the electrode tips close to something grounded stick a screwdriver up there and see if it arcs from the screwdriver, but dont hold it when you turn the car over please. (it hurts, trust me)
