ok im in a serious situation. i have a blown head gasket, bad transmission, and no clutch left. plans are in motion to replace the transmission and clutch, but that damn head gasket is really expensive and will have to wait for a few more weeks. but [and i know im stupid for doing this] ive been driving the car everyday to and from work, and theres this ticking noise that seems to be getting louder and louder. well, about an hour ago, my car shut down as i came to a stop light, and it wouldnt start. it took a few minutes of struggling but it finally came back on, barely. just enough to get me home. can i save it or is it fried beyond repair??

YOU NEED TO SEE WHAT KIND OF INTERNAL DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE. I CAN BET THAT SLAPPING A NEW HEAD GASKET IN THERE AT THIS POINT WILL NOT FIX IT. JUST TEAR IT DOWN AND REBUILD IT. IF NOT WHAT KIND OF 240 IS IT? IF ITS A 91+ HATCH I'LL BUY IT AS IS IF THERE IS A TITLE AND NO CHASSIS DAMAGE.

as long as the only reason the head is leaking is a blown gasket, and not a warped head.... Have you checked your oil and coolant for unusual color??

I think wiwalsh is trying to find out if it is an internal or external gasket leak. Internal leaks have all kind of problems like engine overheating, oil-smelling antifreeze, engine running like crap. External leak will not cause too much damage, just spreading oil all over the engine bay and losing compression. (there are lots more, but i dont wanna list em) That ticking could be anything though, and could be a sign that it might not be a head gasket. Just how do you know the head gasket is blown? Shop or personal experience?

John, did you ever do a compression test on that motor? Also, did you ever get that problem fixed with your radiator cap and what not?

Gimme a call or something, I am back from Austin now...
