my 240 is surging

when im sitting there in nuetral its surging from like ~500 to ~1000. it does that straight. and also sometimes after pushing the clutch in after driving in 2nd gear it likes to stick at around ~2000. any ideas? i would put it in the tech forums but i figured it was too advanced. just wanted to see if anyone knew on here before i took it to my mechanic. only answer if you have something positive to say. no douchin

happens on my s14 too. but only when the engine is cold like when i go to work and i dont let my car warm up ill stop at the first stop from my drive way. put it in neutral. stop. then my rpms go continuously from 600 to 1100 then back and again. then after its completly warm after a few minutes of driving it doesnt do it any more.
