So I just rebuilt the engine and drove almost 600 miles on the new parts and gaskets real baby like. Then here's what happens when I take it to 4 grand in 1-3 gear to see if the rebuild is worn in correctly.

wow man that sucks, I have never seen a bump stick break like that. Did you get lucky? or did it mash a valve into a piston?

CHeck the journal guides on that camshaft to make sure the cam was seated properly. That damage looks like the cam was angled improperly and the chain put tension on the end that snapped it.

EDIT: Another possibility is overtorqued cam bolt

I saw a cam break like that on this old a** honda accord in a shop I used to work at. No lie, the owner of the car didnt wanna pay for the damage so he took it upon himself to jb weld the camshaft back together and had his buddy re assemble the engine haha I was told that the engine ran for about 10 seconds before the cam broke again in the same spot.

That is TORSION my friend! More than likely it was your chain that broke it based off the looks of that. The shaft was probably getting stuck somewhere and the torque from the chain, produced by the crank just wore it out and SNAP.

Torsion breaks leave a spiral break on the cam. His cam doesn't show that. It's a clean snap.

hmmm that's what threw me off than. The fact that it's a flat cut, no odd angled cut. More stress than torsion cause then?

Misalignment, uneven loading.

I'm leaning towards getting cam's for the 240 or an SR-20 red-top swap

The reason I think it snapped was a bolt sheared off on the last cam holder by piston 4 which cause it to be uneven or loose (ish) and the torque from the chain F***** it up good!

i would take that opportunity to buy upgraded cams. I would prob go for BC Stage 2 Street/Track cams. And if your bottom end is forged with nice parts, the cams will be a huge improvement. Just make sure u torque everything to spec b/c from reading this thread, the snap was due to improper installation, not failure.
