Over the weekend, my red engine light came on. A day or 2 prior I heard the engine fan running and smelled radiator fluid. Found I was leaking radiator fluid.

Took it to the dealer and was told that there was a defect in the engine casing? and the engine will need to be replaced! I purchased this car late July and have 5500 mi. on it.

I feel I have a defective car and may have additional problems down the road. Should I push for a new car? Would you?...

Need more info. Driving habits? Any previous issues? Any strange noises/conditions before problem? Any warning lights or anything?

Local/city type driving. No problems with the car until I started to hear the fan running in the engine. Once the red engine light came on and smelled radiator fluid, thats when I realized I was almost out of fluid. Added fluid and realized I must have a slow leak somewhere.

I've had the car a little over 3 months. 5500 miles.

I don't think your a candidate for Lemon Laws unless the dealership isn't wanting to pay for the new engine.

Is the dealer covering the new engine?

Yeah...they are covering all costs. I realize that the lemon law doesn't apply. I'm just a little freaked out that the engine has to be replaced. I'm guessing since they're fixing the problem, I shouldn't worry about it. I have to say...I really like the Versa. It's a great little car.

A new engine sounds like a great deal. At the same time it really does raise a concern about this happening after warranty.

Every engine can't be perfect, you're just that lucky one I guess. Sometimes I wish that would happen to my V cause my MPG sucks.

I think you have to be careful with some other damages it might have caused, but since the dealership is fixing it for you, any other damages that come as a result of that they will have to fix it too. so i wouldnt worry too much..... of course if you can get them to replace the car it would be great :s lol ..... but i doubt it...

That's unfortunate about your engine, but that is why they provide a factory warranty, to cover factory defects. Sounds like this is a rare problem.

I would expect they would provide you a car while yours is down.

Also, it would be reasonable to request and receive an extended warranty, something like a 6 year, 100,000 mile warranty. You have concerns about other problems. My biggest concern would be, all of the stuff they will have to remove from the old engine and bolt back onto the new one. An extended warranty would give you piece of mind that if they don't get something right, you will be covered. I would push for this. Let us know how everything turns out.

Well, after 2 weeks I got a call from Nissan that they just got the engine. So, I should have my car back by end of week.

Yes, I am going to insist on an extended warranty. That's the least they can do.

Will let you all know how the car is when I get it back...I wonder if it will have that new car smell again...Hmmm.

Pray they aren't goons and do the replacement right.

I've had the car back about a week now. It's running really good. Better than ever. So we'll see. Although, I thought I smelled radiator fluid when I got out of the car yesterday....I've got to check under the hood.
