I have a 2001 Infiniti QX4 6cyl 3.5L 4x4. It stalls out when I'm at a stop light or within minutes of coming to a stop. No shudders or surges and no check engine lights. The dealership want to replace the MAF for $600 but after doing a little research on line it seems I should try some other things myself first. Now I'm just a girl with no mechanical experience but have changed the HiD bulbs on the headlights, can change tires and oil...I am ready to try anything other than shell out money I can't afford right now, so I could really use some advice on what to try and how.

So there were no ECU codes? Did the dealership do any diagnostics that concretely points to the MAF? You might want to review your factory service manual, available at http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/ to see if you see any diagnostics that fits your symptoms.

It would also be worthwhile to know what years of QX4's and Pathfinders used the same MAF, so you can keep an eye out for a used but known working one in our classifieds. You can also check out http://www.car-part.com for salvage parts. If you decide to replace it with a new one, you should be able to get a nice discount at http://www.everythinginfiniti.com and install it yourself. It should just bolt on to your airbox and plug in... if you can change oil you can change one of these!

Thanks so much for the link and advice. I'm checking today for any codes but won't hold my breath, they're not exactly forthcoming when I ask questions Though I have found a replacement MAF for $150 (it's the same part on the Pathfinder)I had read on line that you clean one of the parts before replacing so I'd like to try that first..right now it's a question of what it looks like..I stare at the engine like a deer in headlights..I could really use a picture that labels all the parts so I can recognize what's what...have anything like that? At the moment I know enough to be dangerous!
