As far as the exterior of my car goes, the headlights are probably one of the worst features from an appearance standpoint. They have a terrible glaze/fog on the inside of them. Has anyone ever taken their headlights apart and tried to clean out the inside of the headlight glass? Is this doable? Can I get some guidance as to how to do it?

I've already searched both recent posts and archives, and read the FAQ and found nothing on the subject.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The fog is definitely on the inside? My Maxima had foggy lights, but it was all on the outside. Meguiars Scratch X removed it all.

I'll look around and see what I can find about how to cure internal fogging.

if it is on the outside, there's a brand called clearview at advance auto parts that does really good. if it is on the inside, i would just buy new lights and make sure to put a nice coat of polyeurethane (sp?) where the lens meets the housing. good luck bro

Have you seen the prices of new headlights? That ain't gonna happen. I'll take another look to see if I'm wrong about the fog being on the inside.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought a tube of this and tried it tonight. The headlights look better but there is still quite a bit of whatever it is that's on there. Upon close inspection it does appear as though most of whatever it is is on the outside of the lens, but it's not coming off. Some of it appears to be bug juice stains. I can't even get it off with gentle scratching of my fingernails. The top lines on the lenses seem to be yellowing, but I can't figure out what's causing it.

edit: I'll see if I can get a decent picture of it.

The plastic that they use on our lights is crappy. I had to use a buffing wheel to get it clean. You can try that, but be careful as to not worsen the problem.

New HID's?

Nope. These are the original xenon headlights. I've always wondered why the low beams are so dim, maybe this has something to do with it.

My bad. I suppose it may be time. Do HID's get dimmer over time?

I had some ozone hazing on my headlights as well when I first bought it. I used the Flitz polish ball and general purpose supplied with the kit. Worked wonders and cleared it all up. Go to http://www.flitz.com to check it out.
