Im 17yrs. old and I bought my first car a 89' 240sx from a auction for $700 tuesday(7/6/04) I was so excited. All was wrong with the car i seen was it needed a Power steering pump, and brakes, just minor stuff. So i leave the place and it doesn't want to shift into 2nd gear then the dash light started flickering off, then about a mile away from the place the car quits so I had to wait for my uncle to come and pull the car to my house. To make a long(a very long) story short the timing chain has to be changed because the car wont start now. So everyone who reads this go easy on me because this is my first car :) and I love 240sx's so im just gonna try to fix the car myself and later drop a SR20 into it but i'll update it to tell people whats going on.

i would say welcome but i don't know your reason for buying the 240.. cuz of the trend.. apparently you said i want an SR so your jumping on the bandwagon and on top of that.. i'm getting tired of seeing.. "i wrecked my 240.. parts for sale"

Naw it wasn't because of the site or anything i just love 240s and im not jumping on the SR bandwagon im 17 and didn't have the money to get a car or do the swap and plus everyone did it before me so that's why it seems like im just doing it because everyone else :). But any way me and my Uncle started taking apart the engine to change the timing chain and we found that the timing chain guide was shattered so know i gotta call the Nissan dealer to ask how much one would be so its day two so hopefully I can get somewhere tomorrow

p.s.- I couldn't get the crankshaft pulley nut off so I can get the pulleys off to take the front cover off to get the timing chain if any one has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it :)

2 things: 1. WD-40 to soak the thread2. impact wrench to remove the bolt.

impact works if you have a good compressor... put it this way.. when i did my last swap... i went to take my flywheel off and they are suppose to be torque down to 120lbs per bolt .. well i was using a 150psi compressor and a 140lb impact wrench ... didn't work for 3 of the bolts... i ended up using a 3ft breaker bar and jumping on it... but if you can't get the bolt off ... use a 2ft breaker bar... and put the car in 5th with the ebrake on (if you have an auto.. put the car in drive with ebrake on)and yank on it from the right side pulling the bar up.. it'll come off..if you want to make it easy.. use some wd40 and let it sit over nite. its torqued down pretty good.. i believe its 90 or 100lbs they are suppose to be torque too... if you have any problems shoot me an IM at "thee 240sx Owner" i've replace a timing chain and guides and cam gear and spindle gear before 4 times now so i know pretty much everything there is for it...

congragulations man! i think you also posted a thread about turbo chargin the sohc? umm a turbo is a big step, there are other ways to go fast, like swapping the head, its alot cheaper and you will notice a big diffrence, plus its legal so it keeps the man off ur back

Aw isn't life lovely lol we fix the timing problem and it was running ok just a slight ticking noise :D, then we pulled the oil dip stick and the oil is white  , so im thinking that the motor might have gotten some moisture in because the front cover and valve cover were off for long periods of time, but my Uncle's says that the head gasket might be blown. So now im taking the head off, im in for the night i mean morning because it was about 1:20am when i finished for the day so ill keep people informed on the cylinder head removal.:bsflag

check and see if you are burning any coolant before you start tearing off the head. And if oyu are gonna keep tearing into this motor you ought to purchase a rebuild kit and just rebuild the entire motor while ur at it.

Thats very true I only got to the intake manifold collector off and some other little things to get to the itake man.., I couldnt get the d**n exhaust manifold/cat bolts off because there s old. Its starting to piss me off because all the things it needs but I love the car so I might still keep it and just get another car until the 240s done.

P.s. - i know this is not relevant but i went to the track Friday and i this guy had one of those turbo Neon's and before i seen it run i was like i hate Neon's but i seen it run and there fast
