My 1993 infiniti J30 has a delayed starting problem

Hello to all;I am having a starting problem with my J-30, it happens more frequent when the weather is cold . When I try to start the car the starter does not engage, there is no clicking or anything, I eventually figured out that if I hold the key in the start position for a few seconds in will start, on serveral occasions after holding the key in the start position for about 10-15 sec with no response, the starter engaged with the key in the alt position, even when I turned it off the starter still continued to run for about the length of time that I had held the key in the start position. Is this a starter problem,relay or an electrical problem?

Are you hearing any grinding or screeching?

If not, you simply need a starter.

do you have a remote starter installed?, if yes, then the continued starting is due because you are not giving it enough time to reset... i dont think i'm making sence.... when you are trying to start the car, and it doesnt start, DONT turn the key to the off position right away, just try to start it and then let the spring do its job, once it is back into the on position, give it a couple of seconds before you turn the key to the off position.... i hope i'm making sence

no, I do not have a remote starter. and to clarify, I don't normally turn the key back manually, just on the few occasions when the starter engaged without the key being in the start position.

no. no grinding or anything, thats why I think it may be some kind of solenoid or computerized part..I ve even considered the battery, but I think if it was a weak battery I would be getting a sluggish crank, not dead silence.
