Ok. I have a 180SX with an SR in it. I was just reading through the post about horsepower and what it takes to make horse power............ Ok my stuf will be different because I am in japan but here is what I did

Stock SR- stock muffler, downpipe, only thing I had changed was the intake, and boost turned up to .8K(dont know what that is in the states I think 1.0 is about 14PSI.

I dynoed 222PS. I have been told that is the same as HP. Does anyone know? I dont remember the torque stuff since it was probably negitive anyway(I am into V-8 when I am in the states)

Just wondering how this compares since most guys have about 200HP.

Last question. I see you guys say not to boost over 7PSI. Here in japan, all the japanese guys say that you can boost around .9- 1.0K safely on a stock SR. that is about(guessing) 11-14PSI. Why is it so different(maybe because I can drive up the road and buy another engine, transmission, harness, and ECU for about $550?)

Good luck to all of you with your cars!!! Jason

I believe the answer to your question lies in the fuel that is available in japan, which I think has a min. octane rating of about 100,where as here in the states the best pump gas you can buy is 93 octane. This would make it much safer to run higher boost on any engine in japan, and it also explains why many people have trouble tuning engines that were never engineered to run with the fuel available in this country.

The octane ratings in japan are not the same as in the US if I am not mistaken, so 100 octane in japan would not be the same as 100 octane in the US.

I am aware of the fact that the octane rating system is not the same as the one that we use in the U.S. ,but when you rate the fuel that is available in japan on the U.S. scale it comes out as around 100 octane.Yeah I probably should have specified that initially but I'm thinking that this guy may be using english as a second language(if thats the case he speaks very well also)since he is in japan so I tried to make this as un confusing as possible for him.

i am so sick of hearing this ocatane discussion. Why dont you search NICO for one of the MANY other threads about octane rating, where myself and others explain that japanese gas and american gas is rated differently.

here is the link that explains the octane rating system. From this you can see that 100 (j octane) is about 94 octane.. which i can get from any gas station around my house.

Those nunmbers are a little higher than what you'd get over here on similar boost levels. We run 1 bar, but the problem is it kills the turbo in a very short ammount of time. I do think the higher octan over there is letting you get away with making numbers like that without upgrading your intercooler.

I could see those numbers coming out of a car here in the US but it would have to have exhaust to duplicate them.

You probably have more torque(in ft/Lbs of course) than hp.

You might find you'll become addicted to turbo cars by the way. i used to be only into V8s but I have seen the light! ;) :D

That used to be me! After experiencing turbo power I've become an addict. Now when I see a V8, I'm thinking about the best way to turbocharge it...maybe someday.

Well, the octane post I started is good LOL. I am in the Marines(777Aaron I speak english LOL I can also speak some japanese though) I use the gas they sell on base. Use to be crappy but now its like 95 octane. Japanese 100 octane is almost $4 a gallon and I work about 17miles away so that is out of the question. Alot of guys I know sell on ebay just to buy gas for there cars(crazy)

V-8 guys! I am also hooked! I have a 64 falcon sprint in the states with a 302 roller motor, big cam....... I sit here day in day out thinking of ways to twin turbo it! Other than the fact that I cant fit more than 235s in the back and I am not cutting the wheel wells on an original sprint I think it would be AWSOME.

Anything you guys might need hit me up. Dont go asking me to send you an R34 Skyline(see them every day!) for free or asking for a body kit. But little stuff like power mirrors and stuff let me know. Anything S13 is easy S14 and up gets hard

If any of you guys decide you want to take a trip to okinawa(about 300 miles south of mainland japan) let me know. There is drifting every saturday night and drags every sunday night. Its a good time. Well you all have fun.

I second that motion. Do it. The only thing better than a turbo car is another turbo car! :ylsuper I would love to build an old turbocharged muscle car. Or maybe an old Toyota or Nissan for that matter? There are to many great cars to pick from. I need more time and money! :D~Brendan

Japan uses the RON system. 100 RON = about 96 PON (our system).

That is quite a difference from 93 (or 91 if you are in cali).

Dori, I can get 94 right down the street, and 104 about 5 miles away.. maybe its not that easy for people in other parts of the country?

Race gas I can get near the drag strip (30 mins away) or at the track (hour away), up to 110 iirc. 94, I've never seen anywhere...just 93, and I know in cali, they are stuck w/ 91 everywhere.

California sucks for Turbo cars, I'm always tempted to buy a bottle of octane raiser everytime I buy gas, but I'm too poor. I'm always worrying about detonation and all that other silly crap. Stupid hippies and their emissions laws. But don't worry, they'll spread to other neighboring states, and then it'll spread from there and so forth. So I won't be the only one in misery....

Any of you guys in the lower octane states ever try out a water/alky injection system to help out? Just wondering because water is much cheaper than race gas or octane boosters.

I wish we had some Sunoco stations down here in TX but atleast we can get 93 octane.~Brendan
