i was looking in the backyard in the garage and found a 275/40/17 tire from a corvette, would this size fit on 01 gt wheels and fit tucked up under the rear of an s13?

The tires can definately fit under the wheel wells, but without width or offsets theres no telling if the wheels will clear your struts or fenders.

You need to provide us all of the information when asking about wheel fitment.

are those the 'bullit' wheels? Theyre 17x8 +31...

IMO, that tire is a little on the big side. But I dont think an S13 would have trouble fitting them.

I think all the 17x8's are +31 offset. You got a pic of the wheels??

I still think 275 is pretty fat for a 8" rim. Mustangs and Vettes run fat tires on relatively narrow wheels, but 240 guys often put 215/45 on 17x8 wheels. I wouldnt go more than 245...

i guess 275 is really wide but i got to ask you a question when you see a tire size lets say 245/45/r17 the 245 is the "contact patch" in millimeters and the 45 is the sidewall in millimeters and 17 is obiously the tire size is all this right because my dad tells me that 45 is the tire contact patch. sorry if i confused you

245 is the tread width or contact patch as you said. 45 is the aspect ratio (meaning the sidewall is 45% of the tread width). 17 is the diameter.

So a 245/45 would have a taller sidewall than a 245/40, but the tire widths would be the same. When people say 'low profile tires', they referring to a small aspect ratio.

On the same note, a 245/45 would have a taller sidewall than a 235/45 tire, cause 45% of 245 is greater than 45% of 235. And the 245's tread width would obviously be 10mm bigger...
