I got my mechanic to install a new basic exhaust a few months back, 3 weeks ago one side where the exhaust connects had a hole in the gasket. He replaced it and said it could be motor mounts going bad. Im bringing it back for him to fix the other gasket free of charge again. Is the only way to tell if mounts are bad is to rev the engine with hood up and see how much it moves?

How many miles are you at? And after almost 13 years, itd be a safe bet that you can go ahead and replace them. And yes bad motor mounts are known to cause exhaust issues cause theres too much play.
