Alright.

Thanks to the success of the now completely off-topic pistol thread, I require NICO's thoughts on multitools.

Here is what I'm looking for:1) Must fit into a 2x1x6.5" pocket2) Must have a clip to clip onto said pocket3) Said pocket is located toward the inner thigh, above the knee. Anything really heavy in there is annoying because it tends to bang around a lot.4) Would be extremely useful, if, say, I was on a plane and it happened to crash.

Go!

I've always liked the Gerber...but SOG apparently makes a neat one too...I believe you can send them in and get them refitted with different tools to your liking

Here is my wingman. Hangs on my keychain and I find myself using it at least once a day. Gerber Clutch.

Flip it open and you have thin jaw pliers. You are not going to wrench a 1/2" bolt with it but silly s*** one encounters during the day is well within it's "grasp."

A fold out knife is there. A word of caution, it doesn't lock out and will flip back if you are not careful haw you wield it.

The obligatory nail cleaner and file. Not sure when or why this became a crucial tool, but it's there and my nails stay clean.

There is a flathead and a flatish phillips head screwdriver.

On the other side is a fine flathead and a set of tweezers.

I don't think I've ever seen a multitool with a clip...if you know of one I'd definitely be interested in it.

I friggin' love my Gerber Compact Sport...smaller than your listed dimensions and it has a lanyard/keyring loophole that folds along with the other tools when not needed. The sliding action on the plier tool is amazingly handy when you only have one free hand...which, considering the nature of the times you'll find yourself needing a multitool, is pretty often.

You could probably attach a macguyvered belt clip to the Compact Sport Gerber (the bigger Gerber doesn't hate the vent dealies on the sides that the Compact Sport model does) with a couple pop rivets or something like that.

Most of Leatherman's options have an "aftermarket" clip that can be installed. Their Skeletool comes with one built in:

The Skeletool looks bad-a**, but it doesn't have enough tools, really.

The Leatherman Charge TTi (which can use the optional clip) is my current favorite:

But it's a little pricey.

The Victorinox Spirit WAS high on the list, but no clip:

Which is a shame, as except for that and the weeeeird knife blade, it's a very sleek, almost artful piece of work. I might get one just to look at.

I have the same one. Its quite useful. I don't think I get nearly the use out of it that you do though. I occassionally use the pliers as a fuse puller and the bottle opener gets some use.

I used to carry around a knife made by Swiss+Tech that folded into the shape of a key. Very low profile and was fairly useful to have around. Of course, it didn't have many tools, but it did have a bottle opener (though it was a bit iffy to use since the blade had to be open and the blade end was the handle). Since its roughly the size of a key though, I generally forgot it was there until I needed it. That wasn't a good thing when I was going through security at a courthouse a while back.

I always forget I have my knife on me. I never go anywhere without it so I don't think about it. I've tried to go through airport security, airforce base security, courthouse security, stratosphere security (LOL)...everywhere. Just don't think about it until I'm at the metal detector and then...ah crap!

I went into jury duty with my FAVORITE 4-inch Kershaw Tanto...and they took it from me

Took me a month and two letters to get it back.

Nice thread btw...These things are AWESOME gift ideas for any person with a Y chromosome...and even some hardy double XX'ers

I have a classic leatherman wave - it's great for the glove box, but I wouldn't want to carry it in a pocket.

Considering getting one of these, although it's limited to only blade/pliers.

The lady loved this little gift: picks the hell out of her cuticles (sp) with it.

They make a plier'd version as well as one with multi-ga strippers.

I usually lean towards Leatherman over Gerber. But at that size, my main complaint of gerbers would be moot. MOst gerbers I've used were the 4" versions with the sliding pliers, and to use any of the tools, you need to slide the pliers out. My leatherman has that beat since it's a folding plier with accessible knives and saws when collapsed. However, the Gerber has my leatherman beat in blade quality. Since at that size, the gerber would be collapsible, I would probably go with Gerber.

I have a few from cheapo "Free with purchase" to a Leatherman Super Tool (older now discontinued model). I also have a few Victorinox "Pocket tools" that are more tool, less knife, like such

I say go to Bass Pro Shop, Outdoor Outfitters, etc and check out all the Gerber & Leatherman models and see what you like. Then come back and shop online for them.

To me how they feel in your hand is almost as important as what functions they can do.

A 2"x1"x6.5" multitool is a MONSTER.

TMS was off topic and displaying poor reading skills.

I have the Swiss Tool Spirit and I love it. I havent handled the Leatherman Charge or Wave, so I can't really compare, but all I can say the craftsmanship of the Spirit is way up there. It has a very solid "bank vault-like" feeling to it. You can tell it is made to high tolerances.

As for the clip, it can be added with a little customization using a Leatherman clip (ironically). Here's the link: http://forum.multitool.org/ind....html

If it weren't for the Spirit, I'd get a Charge or Wave.

I just went over your requirements again... looks like you're looking for something lightweight. I'd go with the TTi Charge since the Spirit does have some heft to it.
