First off, thanks for looking here. I have a 93 KA se hicas. It has always run smooth and strong, now over the last month that has changed. First problem is the squeal. Mostly when the engine is cold or when I turn the fan up. I thought it was the belts so I had a Nissan dealership change them (I've never done belts and didn't want to screw it up). It stopped the problem for a while, but now the squeal is back. I thought this might have something to do with my leaking power steering. I re-tightened everything and some electrical tape just to make sure no leaks. That stopped the leak really good but the squeal is still there.Second: It's not all the time but my car will idle and run really rough. The idle is sometimes low (500) sometimes high (1200). Even on the highway it will hesitate and run rough.I'm thinking it might be plugs? Does that sound like a possible answer? If you can let me know anything thanks. I'll continue to search for answers

your erratic idle could be caused by your plugs. i would suggest replacing the plugs and wires too if you have not already. as for the squealing, its most likely your belts. there is probably some moisture or something leaking onto them to cause them to always squeal.

edit: you may also want to look into your fuel filter.

I sprayed my belts with some belt dressing and it stopped the squealing. After the next rainstorm I had to re-spray it, but it works.

For the idle, like xekushnr said I would do plugs/wires if you haven't done so already. Also, try cleaning the throttle body and also cleaning or even removing the AIV (black box behind the airbox). The AIV sends intake air to the catalytic converter and is an emission device, but once the car is warm it doesn't make a difference if you have it or not. If the inside is carboned up it may send hot air into your intake and make the idle erratic. A lot of people remove it, you have to in some cases, but you can get away with cleaning and reinstalling it.

The idle problem is a common question on NICO, search and you will find all the information and ideas you need.

I'm getting plugs and wires tonight. While I'm at it might as well clean the throttle body and try the AIV suggestion. My timing chain (like all timing chains) rattles, could this be a timing problem. Thats what I'm worried about. Well, anyways thanks for the help!

sometimes its not even the belt if you just had them replaced then there shouldn't be a squeel. have the alternator checked out somtime if that goes bad or is starting to go it will make the same noise

Really? That makes a lot of sense now. I had to jump start someone awhile back. Soon as I connected the jumper cables it started squealing. It didn't make any sense that the belts would squeal. But it's been the damn alternator. Thanks!!

About the timing chain rattle...

Your timing probably isn't off and causing a rattle. A common problem all 240's have is the chain guides are plastic and break causing it to rattle. Check this link out, its a good writeup on how to fix that problem (remove the guides/clean the tensioners).
