mufflers and sound are irrelivant.. pick one out off of ebay for 20 bucks, and have a muffler shop weld it on. its all about pre-mufflers, and pipe bends.. if you have a straight through muffler, it doesnt matter how big/looks.. if its straight through.. its goign to be the same.

Incorrect.

Muffler is one of the MOST critical components, after the resonator.

Your Megan was cheap for a reason - No resonator and a cheaply fabricated muffler. Piping is good, but that's almost impossible to screw up.

We tested mufflers from several manufacturers before deciding on the Magnaflow units we use... Sounded and performed the best.

Lop off that unit and start shopping. DO NOT buy a $20 ebay muffler, you'll destroy it in a matter of months (maybe weeks). The packing is loosely inserted and is not supported by a grid - which means it will settle to the bottom of the canister and sound like poo.

If the $20 mufflers were worth a damn, the companies that build REAL mufflers would go out of business.

Sometimes that $100 you save up front goes away REAL fast when you're dissatisfied with the results.

I have a magnaflow muffler with custom made pipe without a resonator.

Listen to what he says... their mufflers sound really awesome. Nice and deep sound. No rice. Without the resonator its a bit loud after 3k rpm.

I also have a magnaflow muffler with custom piping, and people say its one of the nicest they've heard. I actually haven't heard it outside of my car, but I like the tone and volume from inside...

i have a megan racing muffler and the sound is decent but it does look ugly.

however if i were you i would just buy a bolt on exhaust cause during a smog test all you have to do is unbolt it and bolt the stock back on.

The Apexi n1 is one of the highest rated sc mufflers. It was also one of the loudest, so if you go with the n1 use a resonator.

If i remember correctly, SCC tested all the top import mufflers last year on the same car and the n1 had highest hp output, and second loudest noise without a resonator.

Let me rephrase: the power output tests were done without the little resonator inserts in the muffler, so they tested the decible output the same way. The n1 I have came with a resonator. It's actually a really nice muffler, if I ever get it on my car.

Magnaflow's RULE. I have a custom catback that was salvaged off a crashed s13, no resonator, decent piping--the muffler that was on there was super crap, tons of louvres, chambers, dual-tip, etc.

Got a nice racing series Magnaflow, single-tip for X-mas, once it was welded on, i definitely noticed the improved flow, and it sounds sweet too.

Here's a pic:
