Muffler Tip Question

My friend is going to give me his muffler that he used for two months, but the tips are 3.5, which is WAY TOO big. If I took it to a muffler shop and had them chop off those tips and put some 2'' tips on it would it make the muffler more quiet, and essentially more normal? Or do tips not play as big a role in terms of sound?

Big tips = mostly for the bling OR overcompensation.

Some tips are able to affect sound to a small extent. Some tips are resonated and are able to absorb a small amount of sound. I had one where I could remove the packing in the resonated portion which didn't really change the volume. Removing the packing just made it sound a little bit more like "angry bees." I would say if someone uses this to try and cure a noise problem, it's a poor fix and perhaps only a bandaid. The packing in mine blew out within a year. If you are concerned about noise, make sure the muffler(s) are adequate for what you want.

i suggest u save money and go out and buy a whole cat-back cause its gonna sound like $h!t and its not giving u any power with just the tip
