basically my rear resonator or muffler (whatever that is) rusted off. and no its not the center muffler under the middle of the car. this is in the back right before the tail pipe. actually the whole piece with the tail pipe rusted off so now my exhaust ends like 2 feet from my rear bumper. i still have the old resonator if i really need to weld it somehow back on but do i really need it? should i just get a new muffler for the rear or is 2 mufflers redundant? should i just get a piece of exhaust pipe and continue the exhaust to the rear bumper and be done with it? is there really a point to this rear resonator/muffler thing? sorry for all the questions but this is only my second post on here and my pathy is my first car. thanks in advance for the help

Hey PJ..it seems I've been answering alot of the exhaust questions of late on our forums. Your secondary muffler near the bumper is to do only one job. Muffle your exhaust/keep her quieter. Its up to you if you want to keep it or just add a piece of pipe in. If it was me Id just straight pipe it. As a matter of fact, when my new primary muffler arrives (ie center muffler) from flowmaster, and I've installed it, I have every intention to remove the same rear muffler and pipe it. It has nothing to do w/ emissions. In any case just make sure to divert the heat away from the vehicle. Either straight towards the ground or off to the side of the vehicle. Best of luck.

So removing the resonator will not throw any codes or cause me to fail inspection? Also will it make it sound louder? Im thinking about getting a flowmaster or borla and just cutting of the resonator like you did

update. i left the resonator off and just added some 2 in exhaust pipe to the end and added a nice exhaust tip. it does sound a bit louder but its not much different from before and you cant hear a difference from inside. there is no check engine light and i dont think there will be a problem with the inspection. im from ny right in queens so my inspection should be harder (in theory) than anywhere else so you should be fine lemass.
