As I was going through and figuring out what was going on with my front speakers I checked out my backs and they're MTX somethings that have a peak of 150 each. Is MTX a good brand, they are sort of fuzzy some times with the bass, but 50% of the time they are great and loud. What are your thoughts on MTX.

mtx is a great speaker. If you have no amp on them, its more than likely being underpowered. When you don't feed a speaker enough power, it doesn't generate the correct em field for the magnet to push on and it pushes at an angle, which can cause distortion. Other reasons are there could be a short in a speaker wire somewhere, which will cause a mad crackle when certain volumes are exceeded. They could be blown, which would make nasty noises as they get louder. Or, you could be feeding them too much bass, which will cause the mids and highs to sound like a dieing zebra, along with the characteristic boomzzzzzzzz sound. 90 percent of the rides where i live sound like the last possibility, due to the lack of intelligence around here, heh.

Any speakers will sound bad if they are in the wrong enclosure, aren't crossover'd correctly, or if they are overdriven.

The same can be said with cheap speakers... you can make them sound better if they are in an optimized for enclosure, xover frequency, and given correct power.

They're run off of the factory amp I think, would that make a deal?

well, enclosures don't make a big difference on speakers that small, best worried about when doing things with subs. You need more than factory to drive those speakers correctly. they say 150 peak, but they are likely 50 or 75 rms power, which is what they will perform well with.

So how much does the factory amp put out on a 95 rear speaker? Update: A penny was in the left speaker and lots of **** in the right. Left one sounds perfect now, right one still has something wrong with it's bass. It just doesn't put out any lower frequencies, there is just a crackle of the lower frequencies but not much actual sound. Any ideas? I'm prolly going to unsolder it and try to clean it a little better.

its seized if it crackles and don't move, throw it away. i don't know stock specs on s14, but i've never seen a factory audio system on those push more than 20 a channel

The speaker works fine in all the other frequencies, it's just the bass that is fuzzy and scrambled. What should I do about the amp, think its worth it to upgrade the stock to a more suitable one?

well, i'm an audio fanatic, so yea, i would. Its just a matter of do you want to spend the money. The reason it works fine in all other frequencies is because to create those, the speaker doesn't have to move much. When it tries to make bass, it has to move a lot to make low freq's and the coil rubs on the magnet inside the speaker. Eventually it will wear through one of the coil wires and it will stop working at all.

Would the "under amped" theory still apply even though the left speaker works totally fine?
