Has anyone ever heard of someone putting a MSD ignition in a Pathy or a Q?

As a honda guy, Alot of people have ripped out the OE ignitions and installed some type of MSD crap which only led to problems.

If the truck is heavily modded (heavily like 400+ whp) then MSD is optimal along with the computer piggyback or realtime engine management system.

But for on and off road, leave it alone.

If it isnt broke, dont fix it!

If your looking for a little more power. Look into a 50-75 shot of nitrous. Im sure (but not 100%) that the automatic slushbox can handle 50 extra hp. Make sure to get a wet kit as the dry kits tend to leave cylinders lean and usually causes damage.

Newer wet kits are activated by WOT switch (wide open throttle) so its safer then hitting a button at lower engine speeds.

Kits can be found for 300-400 if u search which is what you would spend on MSD

I actually forgot about NOS kits, now that i realize it 300-400$ isnt too much for such an HP increase, question i have though is how exactly does it work, like if i floor it from 0 will it be providing nos until i let off the pedal a little, as you said with the WOT kits, or maybe a button would be better as it wont be feeding it the whole time? Also approx how much would it use per shot and how long is a shot considered?

For example in my head the WOT kit is pretty much whenever i floor it, it will provide me the NOS automatically, but lets say im at a stoplight and go 0-60 flooring it, how much of the NOS would i use? Lets say having a 15lb tank how much id have left.

Do not floor it from a stand still unless you like looking at the inner working of your engine and/or manifold. It is meant to be used when the engine is at higher RPMs. So roll into the throttle and somewhere around 4k + hit the gas. You dont want to keep on WOT for too long for risk of burning out rings or other critical components.

Since your in Miami, goto Murrays Speed and aks them their thots and ask whatever questions u have. heres a few below from NX.

Q: How much nitrous should I use and what is a "shot"?
A: A "shot" is simply how much horsepower you will get. Nitrous Express, unlike other manufacturers, measures their systems using "wheel horsepower" (whp), which is usually about 15% less than standard flywheel horsepower (hp). So a NX 50 shot will give you 50 whp and about 59 hp. Keep in mind that your torque will go up much more than your horsepower, and will come in at a lower rpm. This will have the effect of forcing you back in your seat when you activate the nitrous. Nitrous Express is also unique compared to other nitrous companies in that they offer a 35 shot designed specially for new nitrous users. This is a great option to have if you are just beginning and are unsure about using large shots.

35-40 Shot: You shouldn't need to purchase anything but 1 degree colder non-platinum spark plugs (iridium is preferred).

50 Shot: Get a set of 1-2 degree colder non-platinum spark plugs, preferably iridium.

Q: How should I mount the bottle?
A: Mount it at about a 15-degree angle with the valve end higher and pointing towards the front of your vehicle.

Q: What should I know about nitrous pressure?
A: Keep it between 900-1050 psi. A warm bottle will have a higher pressure than a cooler one. On the NX gauge, the needle will be in the green area if it is safe to use. If it is too low, you will not get enough power, too high and it can cause damage. Too heat up the bottle, use a bottle warmer (included in the GenX accessory kits). To cool it down, use a wet towel or chamois.

Q: How long does a bottle of nitrous last?
A: You use about .8 lbs of nitrous for every 10 seconds of use on a 100 shot application. For other shots, divide the above usage by the correct amount (e.g. a 50 shot will use .4 lbs every 10 seconds). Nitrous costs about $3.50 - $5.00 a pound. your typical bottle which comes with kits are 10lb bottles.
You will want to get a new fuel pump and fuel filter also! i forgot ab that. you dont want any fuel pressure loss. use 92-93 octane also to prevent detonation. Higher octane burns slightly late to retard timing a little which is good for the engine. :dblthumb:

Thanks for answering most of my questions, but lol man, i dont live in Miami, just a old s/n i use, also if you recall my detailing pictures, i dont think trees loose their leafs, there would be palm trees around my house if i lived down there.

edit: also that tank would last for a while then, and would it degrade any of the rings and stuff in the engine lets say if its used 1-2 times a week? I mean as long as your doing it the right way i dont see any way for damage to occur to our vq, they are pretty tough, now about the trans, do you think it would handle that 50whp boost along with the tq? Thats what im a little more worried about, but i think it should be fine.

Yeah this might be in my list of things to come.

So far on that list

no particular order:

Finish up the audio (in process, will be done this month)

Get custom exhaust headers made along with the rest of the exhaust

Get my hood, front bumper repainted, door handles and side mirrors color matched

And now the NOS kit.

No someone already checked the g35/350z headers and they are different and also its a coupe, so i mean in an suv, theres probably different items mounted, and stuff that can get in the way, clearance issues with stuff etc.

This is why im going to get custom ones made.

Nitrous is a bad idea for a stock auto transmission

And the guy that said not to change ur dist because oem is better is kinda wrong. In a honda, yes, oem distributor is best until 700hp they just work perfect when brand new and no aftermarket ones have the same reliability.

That might not be the case with nissan distributors compared to aftermarket though

I doubt they make a kit compatible with our computer though

And the headers off a coupe/sedan with the VQ dont bolt up either, our manifolds turn down where as theres go straight back, where it our cars, would be turned into the firewall

I bought a set for a G35 and compared it to the one I got at the junkyard from a wrecked pathfinder, much different angle

a 50 shot is perfectly safe for any stock vehicle no matter what brand. I would do a compression check/leakdown if they engine has some mileage. The torque converter for an SUV can handle quite a load. If it can pull a small boat, it can handle 50 extra horses. If a supercharger was added, the torque converter would have to sent out for higher stall rate.

I wondering where your getting this "might" info? Are you posting with speculation or actual facts?

thx for clearing up the header question.

:squint:

I say might, because neither you, or I, have ever pushed the factory spark system to run a higher hp forced induction setup, so no I dont have facts that the MSD unit would be beneficial.

I was refering to how you brought up that boosted Honda D/B/H/F series motors mostly run OEM distributors over aftermarket MSD units because the oem ones function the best and you gave this threadstarter advice NOT TO pursue an aftermarket unit from MSD

So I ask you, where are YOUR facts.

I have a feeling youve never run a nitrous setup after reading all the info you wrote in this thread to. But Ill stick to just pointing out how your kinda going over your own words in this thread alone.

So many things wrong with that statement I dont know where to start.

Not correct, you launch that car off the line as fast as you can, accelerator to the ground assuming you have traction. You can activate the nitrous after youve launched (of your drivelines to take it)

WOT switches have to be activated to kick in. The way my DRY kit is hooked up on my Prelude and my friends mustang is that you have to "arm" the system by hitting the switch, then the system knows and only injects nitrous when the system detects you are @ WOT. What I, and most people do, is launch and shift into second, arm the system as soon as I shift into second and since I am already WOT the system instantly starts injecting the nitrous, and cuts of when the system detects that youve let off the throtle

I know youve got a performance attitude EsotericImage, but cmon man, look at the crap youre writing. Come back to reality

That is exactly what i said! Anyone who has ever run nitrous knows you spray when the engine is at a higher rpm. Your rant about some DRY system on a mustang and prelude isnt even needed when everyone knows dry kits are garbage and no one uses them anymore. Besides, you referring to shifting which the topic is for an automatic.

As far as MSD is concerned, these are made for high horsepower racing engines. Not an SUV that takes someone to work and back.

I know you have some nitrous experience, but look at the crap your posting. none of it helps with adding a small spray which is fine with 1 step colder plugs. If you have no useful information, please dont post info that doesnt pertain to the actual subject.

Please come back from your dream world of mustange, preludes, caramel streams and chocolate squirrels.

All ridiculousness aside nitrous would first of all be harmful to your stock engine and trans, and even more importantly the dumbest mod you could ever do. If anyone sprayed their R50 they should be banned from the forums based on stupidity alone and have their license revoked. Possibly even banned from going out in public because they've proven to lack the mental capacity to walk with one foot in front of the other. Get my point? Nitrous, on an R50, :rotflmao

So what you are saying is it isn't a good idea to use a MSD on a pathy or Q. Good thing it took this many posts to figure that out.

Im still shaking my head from the ignorance in this thread. Why would nitrous be harmful? Why is ok for a G35 with exact same engine to have nitrous added but because its in a pathfinder, all of a sudden if bad. Please save your cheerleading for when you know what your talking about.

I love the "fanboy" comment. Fan of what? It obvious that some people on this thread talk like a woman with a paper ***hole. IF you know WTF your doing, any car is safe for nitrous.

This whole thread is jammed with ignorance. Empty V, Do I need to find you some pom poms and a mini skirt since you want to be a cheerleader? Mental Giants!

WPGQX4- leave the MSD for when your Engine has over 400hp.

Since im in a good mood and you two scholars really need to do research before making yourselves sound like an idiot. Here... Taken right from NX's site:

Might be ridiculous to you because YOU dont like it. Others might like it. That roof rack in your sig in my opinion looks like crap. But I dont go on and on about why others should or shouldnt do what they with their rides. If thats what you want to do to your ride, so be it. I just have a problem with members that dont do research and broadcast wrong information.

Im so glad i dont have to mod this site.
