How hard is it to install this system? All I need is the MSD 6a box right? anything else? Also will the 6aL with the rev limiter better is will the regular one do fine?

it's pretty easy to install an MSD 6A on any car, well any 4 cyl or 6cyl i should say. ranging from 30mins to 2 hours.

What else would I need besides the Ignition Box? Caps? Wires? blaster coil? anything else to make it work?

check your distributor first, mine has an internal coil, which means that you would have to drill holes into the distributor to wire to the coil, I have had the MSD 6a for a while and am afraid to drill into my distributor

You will also need the tach adapter.

does msd ignition help on anything? I heard you need bigger plug wires for it to be useful.

msd makes sure you burn all the fuel up

never heard about changing to bigger plug wires when adding msd

I run the 6A on my 90, and I had to get the tach adaptor P/N 8910, it makes a signal that your ECU and tach can read. Anything beyond the tach adaptor is optional, such as upgraded wires, coil, etc. The SCI model is supposedly for "import" or "sport compacts", basically, it's somewhat specialized for high rev engines. If you will notice, we don't have that high of a revving engine, so I say the 6A or 6AL will do just fine.

91+ 240's does not need a tach adapter. I bought one for nothing, now it's just collecting dust. For your S14 you can use the factory coil... I do have an idea about using a S13 distributor on a S14 so you can run an external coil to make the most out of the upgraded ignition.

I feel a little faster starting, smoothed idle, little better throttle response...basically everything MSD claims. It's not something that gives big HP for the money, maybe 3-5 HP tops, but I think it was a good investment. Mainly I got it to compliment the cam and nitrous.

Mostly bolt-ons. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss some in particular. The MSD is not a bad deal. You going to try one out?

i've always wanted one but honestly didnt think it was worth the $200+ for minimal gain. the main thing that entices me about it now, though, is the better idle and probably better gas mileage. i also wanted to try the nology hotwires for the longest time, but i've gotten mixed messages about em. some say they help a lot, some say they dont help any and just burn out quickly

I can't imagine needing both MSD and Hotwires. They both fire a captive charge for a bigger spark discharge. If you are after one or the other, go with the MSD, the 6A and the 8910 is less than $200 and will do a lot more than the Hotwires at basically the same price. The only difference is that the MSD will take longer to put in.

The coil is optional, but given the age of our cars I opted for the Blaster for good measure, just to be sure. If you don't want to get the Blaster, I don't see any problems with running the old stock one. There is no need for a new coil, but MSD says you must have the tach/fuel adaptor.

Good luck, have fun, and keep us posted. It's always good to have some detailed information around for others to search for in the future.

MSD actually has a really good tech support dept. Get on their site and they can custom make a wiring diagram with your specific application. We put one in a 95 Tacoma that they made a custom diagram for, and it had an interal coil.

I am looking into a MSD 6AL for my 240. I've got a 90 chassis, but a 1995 engine, which means I had to use a 1991-93 external coil. Does this make the MSD intall at little easier/more straight forward than others? Anyone who can help me out, the input would be greatly appreciated!

I have the MSD 6A with the Blaster coil and MSD 8.5mm wires.

When I connect it---the idle goes up about 100 rpm.I have a plug connector to switch back to stock...when you want to use a scope ---you need to run it stock.
