Hello,

I wonder if it is possible or if anyone ever tried 4 MSD coils and 4 sparkplug wires on their CA18DET. My coils are bad so I need to replace eitherway, but will this work???

Coil : http://store.summitracing.com/...-8207

Ifso, which wires go to the MSD + & - ??

Thank you.

Actually the first generation ca18det non-intercooled came with direct ignition one pack coil and spark plug wires , so it didn't have individual coils. It is doable and easier to use it with a stand alone computer,

pulsar gtr :Thanks for your reply, I own a 1993 , S13, RWD, 200sx that came equiped from the factory with the CA18DET.

I'm not planning to go standalone! So I just want to know how to wire it and still using factory ECU.

The plugs on each coil have 3 wires, 1 ground, 12volts and ECU signal. Can someone please explain what wire goes to the MSD coils?

your probaly have to get the msd box for distribiterless cars and run them with that

if you need new coilpacks they should be the same as FWD KN13 Pulsar NX (1988~) IIRC

Keep an eye on ebay. I see CA and RB coils on there relatively frequently...

I like the idea ; a rack with 4 MSD coils and 4 leads , that's why I want to go that way but only if possible!

you would have to do some wiring study but there's no reason you couldn't trigger four can coils instead of the stock ones. Just get top notch wire so you don't cause any electrical interferance with the computer.

a guy i know was running i think an RX7 coi pack, where two coils were used with two plug wires off each...

i know electromotive makes coils and crank trigger systems, but they are expensive.

why not just get some new coils (CA, RB, GM i think i heard too) and get a HKS twin power ignition or a MSD DIS-2, all the JDM tuners use stock coils with upgraded ignition modules... i think this is the best solution.

i have heard that some GM cars use the same coil pack so maybe a little searching can reveal an upgrade,

but i really like teh MSD DIS-2 and DIS-4 (depending on how you want to run it, either two coils on one channel or 4 seperate channels) -

Late model engines with distributorless ignition systems (DIS) can take advantage of MSD performance with the new Digital DIS-2 and DIS-4 Ignition Controls. These capacitive discharge Ignitions feature multi-channel capability complemented with multiple sparks, rev limiters and a timing control. The new DIS Ignitions are engineered with the latest in digital science including power MOSFET technology and efficient IGBT coil drivers. The features of the ignitions are managed by a 15 MHz microcontroller for extremely fast compensations and decisions. In the end this creates incredibly accurate spark delivery, rev limit and timing functions. The multi-channel design of the MSD DIS Ignitions saturate each coil pack with 470 volts and up to 115 millijoules of spark energy. This creates more efficient combustion in the cylinders to produce more power. Throttle response and mid range pull are also improved due to a series of powerful multiple sparks that last for 20° of crankshaft rotation. To complete the package MSD engineers built several great programmable features into the DIS ignitions to give you better performance on the track. There is a Two Step Rev Control which gives you one limit to set for holeshots and another for top end performance. For engines using nitrous or extremely high cylinder pressures you can also program a High Speed Retard after the engine hits total timing. Both of these features are easy to adjust with built-in dip switches. With proven MSD Ignition technology and years of performance ignition experience, an MSD DIS will make a great addition to your car!

looking through MSD website i see a few nice things:

Blaster DIS Racing Coil - (runthis with OE crank trigger wired to the DIS-4 using these individual coils :) )

For all-out race cars with multi-channel coil drivers this new Blaster Coil will provide the incredible voltage your vehicle needs. This coil will top off your MSD DIS HO Ignition system with its low resistance and quick rise time. This combination can produce a spark with incredible voltage that's capable of burning the fuel mix in any cylinder!

Stacker Ignition, 4-Channel, Distributorless PN 7010*

Simple to install with no cutting or disconnecting wires. Powerful capacitive discharge sparks improve combustion for increased performance. Diagnostic LED confirms operation at a glance. Models for most any application from distributors, to coil packs and individual coils per cylinder.

The MSD Stacker Ignition connects to your vehicle’s wiring without disconnecting anything! Actually, the factory ignition remains in place and the Stacker delivers a powerful CD spark to improve the initial ionization of the plug gap to improve combustion in the cylinder.

Operating Voltage: 10 - 18VCurrent Requirement: 1A per 1000 RPM RPM Range: 15000 Max Spark Series Duration: 20° Energy Output Max: 120mJ 250VVoltage Output Max: 250V

Stacker Ignition, 4-Channel, Distributorless PN 7010* Designed to work with DIS vehicles with coil packs.

Still no answer on this one!

Anybody..............?

When running an EMS you only use 2 of the 3 wires on the coil. So one is 12 volt, ECU signal and the one that is not used is the ground (grounds on the coilpack rack). Will a MSD coil work on the 2 wires?

Thanks,

The stock coils got three wires,The coil is made up of two sections, 1)primary winding, which is pin 1 = 12V, secdon pin is the output signal from the power transistor which measures 0-28Vp-p with reference voltage at +14v (I took the measurements by a scope because I want to design a ptu with couple extra volts p-p.

2) secondary winding is bascially the output amplified signal (which is where the voltage gets to the spark plug). This third wire is a ground .If you have the service manual, it will show you a diagram of it, and it will make more sense to you.

I hope thats what you are looking for.PULSAR GTR

i dont think that coil you posted is for use with Direct fore ignition systems, i posted one made by MSD that is:

Blaster DIS Racing Coil, For all-out race cars with multi-channel coil drivers this new Blaster Coil will provide the incredible voltage your vehicle needs. This coil will top off your MSD DIS HO Ignition system with its low resistance and quick rise time.
