Hello, today i went to a performance store right here on El paso Tx, because i wanted to know the price of tunning my car. I just bought a SAFC and 370cc injectors i do not have any installed but i still wanted to know prices. But the guy told me that i will need a MSD 6BTM so he can tune it. I told him that i saw some guys retarding the time manually(i gues that could be the word) and he told me that if i tune it without a MSD BTM my motor will blow on one month and that the car will not work with the time retarded manually. What do you guys think should i wait and just buy the wideband and tune it myself or is he right??Thanks

uh.... im calling the BS flag on this one. you can tune it yourself if you do it right. granted it would be BETTER to get a good ignition it is NOT a requirement.

what are your goals with the car? the problem with retarding the base timing is that it will increase your exhaust temps but if you're not running a ton of boost (and you shouldnt be without a built motor) you shouldnt have any issues.

look at the thread asking about everyone's fuel/ignition setups. hardly anyone is running a BTM...

Jookmasta is running ~12psi, trapping 103s, and running just retard off base. He's at 13* IIRC. Just retard timing correctly and you should be fine.

Chances are he just wants you to buy something from him.....

if that's all your initial goals are for power you definitely don't require a BTM. Most people don't start retarding timing until they get above 10psi so you wont even need to deal with your timing initially.

if you can spare it, it would be a good idea to upgrade the ignition coil and drop a heat range or two in plugs though. an Msd Blaster 2 coil is a popular mod, i have one myself and can vouche for the improvement you get from response and smoother idle. they're about 37$ everywhere you go. good set of NGK's shouldnt cost you more than 7-8$. it really does sound like this guy is either not very familiar with the KA and trying to play it extra-safe or, more than likely, trying to line his pockets with your money :-p (last I checked the 6BTM was over 200$)

which one should i get

the upgraded coil will provide more power to your spark plugs making a more powerful spark. that will help improve responsiveness of the motor and increase its efficency.

honestly I think it's better to just buy the coil new instead of dealing with people over e-bay for this particular item since you can get it cheaper brand new than what they're asking on e-bay.

case in point: the item you listed in the first link is what you want. he wants 40$ as but it now price and 10$ for shipping. or you could buy it brand new from Jegs for 34$ and they don't charge shipping unless you live in a rural area. in which case I think they add 5 or 6$. Link to Jegs Blaster coils, you want part 121-8202

hey no problem, the only thing you will need is a way to mount the coil, about 8-10 inches of 12 or 10 gauge wire (10 preferrably) a couple of ring terminals and some clamp-type wire taps or soldering iron/solder.

you dont need all of the stuff that comes w/ the 121-8200 set, you cant use the resistor at all and your stock ignition coil plug will work just fine so the 'power tower' isn't needed either.

I'll try and get some pictures up tonight of mine but you'll have to mount the coil, remove your stock one, then rewire the two wires that go to your existing ignition coil to go to the blaster coil.

there are three plugs at your ignition coil. one of the plugs goes to the transistor and it has 3 wires. leave that alone the other is a single ground wire, leave that plugged to the ground. the third is the one I circled in that wiring schematic. it has 2 wires one green and one black w/ red stripe. the green is the ground and the red is the positive. if you have wire taps you can just tap them and run your wires (with the ring terminals) to the appropriate connection on the ignition coil. otherwise you're going to have to cut and solder the wires. right now I'm jsut running the crimp tipe wire taps.

so in short you shouldnt need to buy anything from Jegs else except maybe 121-8213 (mounting bracket).

10g wire will do you no good if you just solder it to the stock wire. It is still funneled through 16g wire. Use my "rewire your ignition coil" mod to ensure good power. Leave the negative wire stock minus what you need to do to hook it up to the MSD coil.
