External drives are definitely not the only ones that can be made to work with the 360. In fact internal hard drives are EASIER to use with the 360 than external ones. No hacks necessary. 360 hard drives are just 2.5'' laptop drives in a special housing with special connectors and a HUGE markup. You can buy a 20, 60, 120, or 250gb laptop drive, patch it with firmware from an official drive, and install it into your existing HDD housing and you're set. But since the 360 looks for specific firmware, only official drive capacities will work...so you unfortunately can't just buy a 1TB drive and toss it in...250's the max right now.
As for why RCA posted an internal drive, that's different. He did that to show how bad MS's markup is on their drives. Granted, the drive he linked was a bad example as it's a 3.5'' (desktop) drive and not a 2.5'' (laptop drive, which PS3 and 360 use as well). 2.5'' drives are pricier and offer smaller capacities. But they're still a HELL of a lot cheaper than MS's official crap.
You can get a 500GB 2.5'' HDD for about $80. And you can get a terabyte for about a hundred more.
