Question for you -

Doing a replacement of all audio in wife's 97 Pathy. Have new Alpine 40w head unit, and a Jensen 6-ch 600w amp to work with. These are definites, as price is a concern.

As you know, the Pathy has 6.5's in each of the 4 doors. Need a recommendation for speakers, keeping at (or under) $200 for all 4.

Also a recommendation on how to configure the amp, as I'd like to use the head unit's amp to drive a pair of speakers, since it's there...

I'll add a Bazooka tube later with the 5th/6th channel bridged(?).

This can be done. The best setup that you could assemble would be to power all 4 of your 6.5s with your amplifier. The first two channels would be on the fronts, the second two channels would be on your rears. The 5th and 6th could be left alone for the time being, that is until you get your sub.

OR

You could bridge channels (1 with 2) and (3 with 4) to ultimately have 2 channels with high power leaving the 5th and 6th channels to operate normally. Then you could connect those 2 high power channels to your fronts giving you a more meaty sound stage and connect your 5th and 6th channels to your rear speakers. This setup would work until you got a sub. When you got your sub, you would just take the speaker cable connected to the amp and put them in their respective channels (non-bridged). That would leave your 5th and 6th channels open and able to be connected to your sub.

Now speakers.

For the <99$ range, I like the Polk dB 6.5s that would run you 99 shipped per pair. http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/POLDB650I would also suggest the JBL GTO 626 http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/JBLGTO626 as these are both really great performing speakers. I have to run to class, but I'll be back online after lunch.

I like the second idea, so I think I'll do that...

More questions:

Should these bet set up with crossovers or are they OK just running off the amp?

Since I need 4 speakers, would you recommend one of these (Polk vs JBL) over the other? Or a pair of each?

Lastly, should I even bother with the head unit amp?

forget the amp in the head unit, you won't even use it if you are amping the speakers externally with the amp you described. Look into concept speakers. 6 1/2s run for about 55 a pair and can be had at most any audio shop. They are good speakers, as I had them in my altima and had no problems and the sound was good. Check those out.

Well, the Polks are more efficient and they have the same power handling as the JBL so they will have more output with the same amount of power. That will be good for balance when you go to add your sub. The nice things about these speakers are that they will be great for your application and that if you decide to upgrade the system, you will not have to touch the speakers because you will already have nice ones in there. Headunit power in any respectable car hi-fi system is not what you want to use. Headunit power is something to get you by if you dont have or are not planning to add an amp later. If I were you, I would buy the Polks for 99 per pair. That would make you and your wife happy. (Mostly you... most women say that they cant tell the difference between walmart speakers and studio monitors so they say that they dont care).
