Ok, how about DWI by a VP candidates husband?

New York Times

"And on Monday, more details seemed to be spilling out. McCain campaign officials first confirmed to the Christian Broadcasting Network on Monday that Todd Palin had pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in 1986; he had been pulled over, they said, in Dillingham, Alaska, while driving a pickup truck with friends. Mr. Palin has several other minor traffic violations, records show. He pleaded no contest to illegally operating an off-road vehicle in a game refuge in 2002, and that year was charged with failing to stop for a red light."

This Alaska story just gets better by the day.

Polls are now indicating Sarah will be gone by November 4th

Thanks Telco for keeping it real. I'm sure those who may be voting for him in the election appreciate the information.

1. Why should this have any bearing on the VP candidate whatsoever?

2. Something that happened more than twenty years ago when the spouse was young makes no difference now to the candidate today.

The NYT is grasping at straws! Heck, if such old stories were relevant, then maybe they should also remember talk about Biden and his plagiarism - at least, that would be about the candidate, not the family!
telcoman wrote:This Alaska story just gets better by the day.
I know! Isn't it great? Thanks for recognizing it.

The DNC is really running scared now. Inspite of Obama's requests to keep the families out of this, the NYT continues to attack in this manner. They don't even wanna listen to their own leader.

And which poll is that? Links, please! If no links are available, then this is a lie, correct?

More "dirty pool" by the Democrats. I'm not saying the Republicans are innocent in the least but the Dems seem to have this down to a science.

- Bush is attacked for alcohol abuse and cocain use which was 25+ years ago- Obama is attacked by some for his pot/cocaine use in HS/college. Note: most of the "attacks" were simply based upon retribution for the Bush attacks- Cincy McCain is attacked for past addition to pain meds - Palin is accused of covering up her daughters birth of a baby, claiming the Down's baby is not actually hers- Palin is accused of causing her baby to have Down's due to lack of pre-natal vitamins (absolute BS)- Palin's husband is attacked for a DUI in '86- Palin's daughter is being dragged through the muck

Attacks against Obama for Rev Wright and his associations with Ayres/Rezko are completely different. Attacks against Michelle Obama is based upon her speaches for her husbands Presidency bid so they are also completely different.

I don't care about Obama using pot/cocaine in college other than the double-standard in comparisson to Bush. The rest of these personal attacks against family members is absolute crap and I fully expect the Dems on this board to agree.

Not worth the effort. Banning for rumor-mongering would be mistaken, and jumped on, as censorship. I will take the high road and lead by example as much as I can.

But, like everybody, we will harp on keeping personal attacks on posters out of the picture. If anybody violates that rule, those posts will be removed/edited appropriately.

As much as I'd like to support a ban, as Telco seems to undermine every point I try to make, I agree with Z's wisdom on this one.

Does the fact that Palin's second cousin, twice removed, had acne in high school qualify or disqualify her from being V.P. of the U.S.?

The entire Palin family is being looked into.

The vetting only began last Thursday.

It was a very poor and rushed job done by McCain. Yes her husband is not running but he is going to have his hands full taking care of those kids and having a DUI on record is something the American people should be aware of.Will it affect a decision whether to vote for his wife? Probably not but nothing wrong with reporting it as long as its true.

The right has flung plenty at the left over the years so whats the problem now?

Are those on the right so upset that you want to ban those on the left whose news you object to?

I thought NICO was above that?

This is after all a car site with a politics division. I do enjoy reading other opinions and I avoid name calling even when I disagree. Yes I do and some of the responses are witty and funny and some others pretty nasty. I think many of us of learned things here even when we disagree.

What's next, Palin is not suited for VP because her other daughter failed geometry? It's not cool to question political ties of Obama's wife, but we can drudge up a 22 year old DWI from Palin's husband. Were they even together back then? Insurance companies don't even recognize a DWI that old as a risk factor for DRIVING. How should it be a factor for whether SOMEONE ELSE is going to be VP?
telcoman wrote:It was a very poor and rushed job done by McCain.
How do you knwo how much thought went into this? Because he didn't announce it and it was a surprise? He must have been eating his total, reading the paper and gone... hmm... I think I'll put all the republicans in a hat and pick a VP.
telcoman wrote:Yes her husband is not running but he is going to have his hands full taking care of those kids
Hey something we can agree on.
telcoman wrote: having a DUI on record is something the American people should be aware of.
No, no it is not. The FBI does not even go that far back when they scout potential agents. Why? PEOPLE CHANGE! Are you the same person you were 22 years ago?
telcoman wrote:The right has flung plenty at the left over the years so whats the problem now?
Do you let this excuse work for your kids? A 4 year old is smart enough to say "She started it!" It takes a lot more to actually be right than it does to realize what right is.
telcoman wrote:Are those on the right so upset that you want to ban those on the left whose news you object to?
I'm not on the right, and I want to ban you because in spite of your age, your posts carry the denotation of a college student looking for any reason to hate "the man".

Are you for real? I started the freaking "NICONauts for Obama" group, lol.

How am I "on the right?"

I'm just saying, focusing on silly sensationalist news makes the Democrats come off as negative and petty. I'm all about a little full-contact politics, but focusing on the VP's husbands DWI from 20 years ago isn't going to make Obama look any better to the public.

The vetting process WAS substandard, but there are better issues to prove that with.

Seriously. The DWI was what? 22 years ago? In addition to the who cares factor, one thing you might miss is that he didn't have any DWI's since. That is a pretty good indication that he isn't driving around intoxicated all the time. Many DWI's are just one time incidents. Of course, many are not, but the history from his first DWI to now supports that he is more likely not a habitual drunk driver. We all make mistakes. I'm sure everyone who runs for office of somekind has something that can be dredged up. This one in particular is irrelevant. Might as well post it alongside articles about Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton. Lets try to have more meaningful discussions shall we?

You are correct. I forgot about this. Again, I DON'T really care about either issue. But, like Newt, I found this point very interesting:

Quote »Newt Gingrich made the point that today he woke up hearing Sarah Palin’s husband got a DUI 22 years ago for having too many beers and driving. The exact same 22 years ago, Barack Obama has admitted to using Cocaine.[/quote]
