Most were full sponsorships, but some were partials.
I've been on the cover of Turbo, featured in Rides, Modified, PAS Mag, and Import Tuner. That's the only way to get sponsored....
Here's an article I wrote about sponsorships:
Quote »I’ve heard so much buzz about companies such as SCP and carsponsorships.com, that I wanted to set the story straight about sponsorships.
First, I've been in the sponsorship game a long time, and there are no such things as signing up for something and then, poof, you're sponsored. Getting a sponsorship, but most importantly, maintaining a sponsorship is a full time job. As backwards as it sounds, having a stock car with promises of going to shows with a decal on it in exchange for free products just doesn’t cut it…nor does it make any business sense.
Look at it from the manufacturer’s point of view. What's the point of spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars in marketing dollars unless you get value add? Would you send a set of tires to an owner of a car who says he'll attend 3 parking lot shows, 2 national shows, and has made it into some small magazine as a "Readers Ride" ????? Think about what sales you'll generate for the money you invest in this person.....nada.
Press...it's all about press. Unless you can guarantee press coverage, and I mean a major magazine, your chances are slim. If you don't have a photo shoot with a major mag (sorry, Readers Rides doesn't count), then you probably won't get sponsored. It's also about connections and who you know. I personally know many people in the industry, which is how I know what really goes on with sponsorships. Unless you have a reputation for building Industry Vehicles, you’ll probably have to build a car first that gets a lot of attention, then you’ll attract sponsors. Sounds backwards, but think about it, you’re going to have to prove yourself to the manufacturers.
To me, sponsorships from distributors or 3rd parties are very suspect to me (I’ll elaborate on this later). The only real sponsorships are directly with the manufacturers. The only way to guarantee sponsorships with the manufacturers is to have a relationship with them. I personally know the reps and marketing directors of all my sponsors. Some are personal friends that I’ve known from years in the industry. Companies like Meguiar’s, Wald, Toyo, iForged, Work Super Wheels, Falken, Eclipse, Infinity, Tein, Turbo East, Rotora, Junction Produce…. I know these people because I’ve taken the time to get to know them. They trust me to represent their companies and their reputations. But even with these connections plus a Turbo Mag cover and coverage from 2 other major magazines and MaxItOut Video, I still have problems getting full sponsorships from manufacturers. The most common type of sponsorships is partials. This is when you pay for roughly half of MSRP. By the way, FULL wheel sponsorships are one of the hardest one’s to obtain.
Now, for those 3rd party or distributors who advertise sponsorships, there is a catch. First, many require you to invest some amount of money to start. Then they dangle a carrot in front of you and say “you can either get a full sponsorship or a partial” Guess how many people actually get a full sponsorship????
So you’re feeling pretty good about your partial sponsorship and they promise 50% off…..but 50% off what??? Is it off MSRP or some other price that they dream up? In most cases, I’ve seen the price that these companies offer their sponsored vehicles at the 50%, more than what I can get them for as a re-seller. So what’s the big deal? These companies make it so difficult to get obtain the product that you end up not using them out of frustration. That’s what they want….because then they already have your initial money.
So how do you get sponsored….well it’s a lot of hard work. You need a proposal that stands out. I’ve even put a CD video together for my cars. You need to show the sponsor your commitment to them and their company. You need to explain to them what you will do for their company, what major shows you will be attending, what major magazines you have lined up. After that, you’ll have to sign a binding contract that explains all the terms and conditions of the sponsorship.
Not to get down on some of these 3rd party sponsors and I hope I'm wrong......and I hope you did get sponsored. If you need anymore info, feel free to contact me by email.
Remember, nothing free comes easy…..
