The parasitic drag of turning a supercharger can exceed 25 hp at high rpm and probably is no worse than an AC compressor [3-4 HP] at idle or cruise in top gear.

Each HP consumes ~~ 1/2 pound of extra gasoline per hour. An extra 1/3rd of a gallon per hour added to the base 2.5 gallons per hour during 60 mph cruise.

Miles per gallon is harder to calculate than pounds of gasoline per hour since the ecu deals in mass flow per time unit.

Air flow is calculated in grams per second as is fuel flow.

Having a supercharger drag on the engine will usually decrease normal MPG by 8 -13% just like running AC on a HOT DAY.

Why many oem superchargers have a clutch to disengage supercharger until needed. Radial superchargers use less HP than Axial versions......function of impellar weight and gear multiplication and oil frictional losses.

Without a clutch the oem would be forced to publish a 2 MPG hit in highway MPG on EPA test so the fines [gas guzzler] must be weighted against cost of clutch and warranty on clutch.

I've had numerous people tell me that the addition of a supercharger has increased their MPG, so long as they don't flog it at every light. While the vortech consumes HP to operate, it produces more power than it consumes.

So to answer your question, it will depend on how you drive.

So basicly while the sc is being turned, it is also compressing air that makes the fuel used more efficently. So the motor needs less fuel to keep the motor at that speed.

So at a 80mph cruise, the MPG should stay the same or increase?

Please more info JOE

this is what i got off the vortec website

What will it do to my miles per gallon (MPG)?When the supercharger is installed as purchased, mileage often times is improved due to the increased engine efficiency. If you tend to drive with a "heavy foot," your mileage may suffer.

I don't have concrete numbers, but if you plan on doing lots of highway travel, consider going with a turbo instead of a supercharger. But the supercharger, as long as you don't floor it, will get better MPG than NA. The reason is because at 80mph, you're turning the engine at around 3.5k RPM. That is fast enough for the belt drag effect (for MPG) as lower RPMs would be. With the added pressure from the compressor, it will be more efficient. As Q mentioned, the effect is similar to having the AC on...however, the AC does not make more power for the engine. The clutch concept will make the install much more complex.

JUST REMEMBER....

Getting a proper tune will have the largest impact on your MPG...do it right!

Maybe Kmech_7 will come along and report his results. I think he has a vortec IIRC...

Hey Kmech_7, what is your MPG like?
