Okay, so i have a 1990 240sx with 145k on the ka24e motor. Im getting pretty bad gas mileage right now (15-20mpg), and just now my engine light came on. I was thinking about doing a swap, but i dont deal with smog and mods.

I want to do a Heavy tune up/ rebuild to get the most mpg out of my car. I recently bought the car used, and the previous owner said he did all the work himself fluid changes, but thats about it. What are some advice i can get on rebuilding my ka-e to get better mpg. I specifically want engine rebuild advice, all other mods i already have in mind. I plan on doing this within a month or so, by then i can potentially have 2.5k. Please help me out!!! college student in neeed!

Just do a OEM rebuild, there really isnt anything to it. My KADE motor had 160xxx miles on it and I was getting roughly 19-21 mpg and when I rebuilt it, 5 speed swap as well, I get about 26-29 mpg. it will cost about 1.5 in parts if you get the good stuff

thanks RJ,

Yea im planning on doing a 5 SPD swap as well, but cant get a hand on some parts though. Where would you recommend I can get an OEM rebuild kit or parts from? I see phase2motor, nismoshop, enjuku, but theyre mostly performance, race mods and mostly for the sr20 engine.

Also take into consideration chromolly or aluminum flywheel, larger diameter exhaust pipes, aluminum drive shaft, J30 differential, platinum spark plugs. those mods will improve gas mileage.OEM build is the way to go...

very true, anything bolt on will help. I shouldve mentioned that while the engine was out, I put lightwieght pulleys, e-fan, battery relocation and put the intake on the side where the battery was. I wanna put an exhaust and alluminum driveshaft and maybe some headers. I got all my stuff from AMSPerformance and some from the dealership

shave the head to get higher compression and get a tune for it. The higher compression will create more power for a given throttle opening, therefore requiring less throttle and fuel for equal amounts of power. It will require you run 91 octane all the time, but hey, ya gotta pay to play Also, if it's in the budget, look into coating the combustion chambers, pistons and exhaust ports with ceramic coatings. Keeps the heat in the explosion and out of the head/cooling system. Some diy stuff you can do to marginally increase your mpg...

Home made undertrays to smooth out the air going under your car - effectively reduces drag

lower your car - again, reduces drag

run synthetic fluids in your gearbox, rear-end and engine - reduced friction frees up power required to turn them

If you've got a huge wing, or any wing for that matter, take it off - reduction in drag, yet again.

Remove any un-necessary weight - makes it easier for your car to get rolling, requiring less fuel.

Some of this stuff is obvious, some isn't. Hope it helped alittle.

What the hell are you talking about? Who designs a car for secretaries?.... With close to 50/50 weight distribution, sport car handling, RWD, and that came in japan and the rest of the world(except the US) with a 2.0 turbocharged pretty bad *** little motor known as the SR?
