I just purchased a 2004 350z and noticed that the mpg reading on the display to the right of the steering column is substantially off. The display says that I get 7.1 mpg and I am pretty confident that my MPG is quite a bit better than this. Anyone have any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Get the owners manual and reset the MPG. If it repeats, verify it against your fill-up mileage. Also verify the display elements light during the power on self test.

If the display is still acts up, disconnect the battery for at least 30 seconds to reset the computer.

I'd follow DJs suggestions, they're all good.

I would like to add that, in my experience, frequent stop & go trips highlight the inaccuracy of the mpg meter but on long trips it can be pretty accurate.

On a long interstate run where I fill up and get right back on the interstate and cruise at a reasonable speed I'll get in the neighbourhood of 400 miles a tank. On hauls like that the most meter tended to be a couple of miles within the calculations I did using fuel added and distance travelled.
