I recently purchased a 2003 Murano after getting it thoroughly inspected. After driving it for a while, I realized it only gets me 9 mpg...

It starts, accelerates and runs excellent. All mechanics I have taken it to say it is a very well taken care of car, and cannot seem to find a problem.

I also took it to a Nissan dealership and ran a computer diagnostic test and there were no errors there either.

Has anyone had a similar issue, or does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this??

Well for one, you can drive at 1/4 throttle, you dont have to go WOT everywhere you go. Anyway, is that what the computer says? or are you only traveling 180 miles per tank? Something is definitely wrong. Maybe someone is syphoning fuel from your tank? Fuel leak? Communists?

Unless you are

a) idling for a very long timeb) missing every stoplight there is to missc) driving at WOT when you DO get goingd) driving at very high speed on the freeway

something is quite wrong.

What Poyzinous said: does the mpg computer only say 9mpg, or is that what you're actually getting when you compute it manually?

Here's another thought: have you reset the mpg computer? if you haven't, give that a try and report back.

I have 180,000+ miles on my 2003 Murano SL AWD and get 14-18 mpg city and 18-24 mpg highway. I change the oil every 3000-4000 miles/engine air filter every 12,000/spark plugs were replaced @ 80,000 miles. On the highway I used cruise control. 9 mpg either means car is malfunctioning/you need to improve your driving technique/car needs some TLC maintenance.

replace your battery. A discharged one can drop 1mpg from your driving.

10 mpg would still be less than half what most of us Mo owners get.

Yeah, more details required. Is the air filter clean, perhaps it's dirty and needs to be replaced? All of the suggestions above are good, none can explain the low mileage on their own, but each contributes a little bit to poor mileage. If you've ruled out all of these obvious things to check, I'd disconnect the battery overnight, which will reset the computer and you can start fresh. The computer learns your habits and tunes the engine and transmission to your driving habits. If you start fresh and drive conservativively (very light on the accelerator and brakes), the car will tune to maximum efficiency. I'd highly recommend trying this if you're exhausted all other options because this is not acceptable.
